Ugh. Sometimes I feel like Reid's entire character background is just a black hole. There are SO many inconsistencies that it's hard to say what exactly is going on with him in any given plot arc. One day he's dying, the next he's fine. One day he's in the midst of a drug addiction and the next he's fine.

So really, yeah. I know it's not likely to be picked up again, but they have brought it up in every season since Revelations. So I have hope for consistency! :D

Aw, I wouldn't say it's a blackhole. We definitely know a lot more about Reid's background than anybody else's. I always assumed that he got off the drugs soon after Gideon left - before Rossi got there, I think. He was a lot more ~himself in 3x06. The ~inconsistency~ that bothers me with Reid is his timeline - I really want to know how much time passed between "Revelations" and "Fear and Loathing", erk.

Also, further spoilers about Reid's secret have kind of pulled away from the drug addiction. :X I wouldn't be surprised if it was mentioned again, but I don't think that's his secret.

I got the impression that when he missed the plane in "Jones" and stayed to talk to Ethan, that he discussed his drug addiction with Ethan (since Ethan suspected it anyway) and began the process of getting clean. That was why he could tell Gideon he would never miss another plane at the end of the episode. He was supposed to be clean for 10 months in Elephant's Memory.

omg I like this much more than my canon. I was mostly thinking later because in 3x02 Hotch says that one of the team members has a drug addiction - so I figured Reid was still in it. But I think I'm definitely revising my personal canon to this...and I liked Ethan, so that helps too.

(I'm sick and kind of incoherent right now; idk if that made any sense at ALL.)

I think Hotch called it "a serious drug problem," which would still work if Reid's been clean for a while—even years into recovery, addicts generally still consider themselves addicts. After only a few months clean, it probably would still be a serious problem, even if he was coping.

It does. I figured Hotch's comment stems from the idea that once you are diagnosed as an alcoholic, drug addict, etc. you recognize you will ALWAYS have a problem with that, which is why people are referred to as "recovering alcoholics" even when they have been sober for years. They reconize that they are still tempted and one drink, one hit will send them spiriling back down. Part of why Reid character seems to not want narcotic painkillers (at least in most fanfics if not canon). Makes me wonder if too many NSAIDs have destroyed his stomach lining...

Yes! This season is all about the team members having secrets. The writers have said that Reid's secret is a "doozy".
