Okay, finally got a chance to watch this episode, and I do have to admit that I think it was the best one this season. It felt like watching CM again, with character jokes, cute relationship moments, and a solid crime plot that wasn't totally obvious from the very beginning.
I found myself pleasantly surprised by Ashley. I think they overdid her intro, like almost everyone did; specifically, the 'better, faster, stronger' sort of thing about her academy training, but whatever. I can overlook it.
I like that she was gentle and insecure, rather than super confident. He presence also let other characters, especially Prentiss and Rossi, really shine. I also like that she made a totally stupid decision, rather than being perfect the whole episode and miraculously solving the case or something like that. I mean, she even failed to talk down the unsub. I kind of like that idea, too, that the group has a new member to watch over and protect and look out for.
Reid and Garcia were adorable, and I was happy to see them being cute together, as they really hadn't had a lot of those moments at all recently. Also, Reid's rambling had been sorely missed. But wtf, where was he on the raid on the house to save Ashley? Are they still leaving him behind? Maybe it has to do with his secret or something (he's the only one asleep on the plane, I noticed) because I hope they didn't just forget about him. Especially since that's unlikely considering he was remembered throughout the rest of the episode.
Anyway, tl;dr: I liked it, and I liked Ashley. Really looking forward to the rest of the season and hoping it stays up to this episode's standard instead of the past episodes of the season so far.
I agree with your comment. Though they did at first make it seem like Ashley was going to be the perfect agent with that better, faster, stronger comment, they didn't continue with that. Instead, we got this raw, real, and hurting woman that is still dealing with guilt about her father.
Reid sooo needs to be out in the field more. Do the writers not like him or something. I'm almost afraid their going to cut him out of the show he's hardly there anymore. :(
I really thought it was a nice balance they met with her on her strength and weakness; she clearly wasn't as 'tough' as the others, but she didn't let her emotions turn her into a useless weepy mess either.
Iknowrite? I wouldn't be worried about cutting him out, since he's such a fan favorite, but he certainly has been out of the field for the most part for the past two seasons (though justified in five, due to his/MGG's injury.) Maybe it's still that factoring in, and he'll get more active later in the season.
The song at the end when she's walking out of the house I think spoke volumes about her and how she felt. I nearly cried.
He is a fan favorite; that's why I'm so confused he's had little screen time. Could it possibly deal with his secret? Though your probably right about his/MGG's injury; I hope that's all it is.
As for the "better, faster, stronger" bit, did you hear the part where they said she does that obstacle course like every day? I think anyone would get amazing at it doing it that often. I don't think they were so much trying to imply that she's some super agent, just that she's driven. As I said above, I get the vibe that because of who she is (and more importantly who her father is), she feels the need to prove herself; that she can be the opposite of who her father was. That's the vibe I got from that scene.
Watching it again I think it was more ambiguous, but I'm still not sure if it was just because she ran it every day or not. The guy standing with Rossi says, "That's the fastest I've ever seen someone figure that out." before he says she runs it every day when Rossi asks, and I'm not sure if he's commenting on this particular time or her in general.
Either way though I'm willing to overlook it, and your explanation makes sense and works for me.
Totally agree, i liked the episode a lot. I grew a bit tired of the focus being on the new girl towards the end, but i liked her well enough and they gave her an interesting back-story and she didn't seem to be one-dimensional. Reid having a crush is always cute in my opinion, and it was refreshing to see Reid being Reid
Yeah, it got a little obsessed with her, but we got awesome!Hotch at the end to make up for it at least, right? And then the plane scene, with Rossi, was excellent as well.
I love how Garcia could pick out his crush just by hearing how he spoke. And then, of course, the little girl squeak on the "No I don't!" was also adorable. One of the best team moments this season for sure, IMO.
