Well written "chick flicks" do get as much money as male lead comedies - look at Bridesmaids (the recent film). As for TV shows with female leads that I can think of the top of my head: Grey's Anatomy, Covert Affairs, Fringe. Also: Medium, Ghost Whisperer.

People will watch well written shows, even if the lead is a female.
