Paget Brewster will not renew her contract

http://ohnotheydidnt.livejournal.com/66586834.html

Potentially unpopular opinion, now that Brewster is gone too, I kinda wish the entire CM cast would quit CM, and then meet up again in a comedy show. I just don't know what. Bunnies anyone?

ETA: What happened:
- CBS kicked Paget out
- Fans revolt
- CBS forced Paget to come back, because of the contract...
- Now that Paget's contract is up, she will leave.

...and wow, 121 comments, I thought this was unshocking news, ouch my inbox. I wish Paget the best.

ETA:

ETA: On the subject of awesome female characters and actresses, but terrible terrible bosses...any of you Star Trek TNG fans here? Remember when Dr.Crusher all of a sudden got replaced before the collective outrage of fans and Patrick Stewart speaking on Gates McFadden's behalf got her back? The rumoured cause of her leaving was that she refused to sleep with one of the producers - a rumor given merit since Grace Lee Whitney (Janice Rand, TOS), was assaulted by two producters she didn't feel comfortable naming, before HER character was given the sudden-off. Ditto for the career of the actress in The Birds, Tippi Hedren, she signed a 7 contract with Hitchcock, who used it to keep her from working after she refused him. The BS that actresses have to put up with and all the things thrown at them is deplorable. If I stopped watching Criminal Minds after Paget leaves, it will less because of No Emily (though I will miss her so), but because of WHY she left. It's a sour taste in my mouth accented by the last weekk's episode, where Garcia thought something sexual happened between her and Morgan even though she was so drunk she couldn't remember any of it, and the writer is unaware of the unfortunate implication of.

In one sense I'm going to miss Prentiss, because she's awesome. On the other hand I haven't been too fond of the lately somewhat heavyhanded Hotch/Prentiss push.

I absolutely support her decision, though. I guess I'm just looking around at the women in Hollywood and wonder where she'll find another role as juicy as Prentiss. Female roles in Hollywood generally sucks. :-(

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2012-02-15 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? The writers have been pretty clear that Hotch and Prentiss are friends only in canon and that no romance is going to happen. And considering that Hotch has a current romantic storyline with someone else, I'm not sure what you are talking about unless you don't want them to be friends at all.

Maybe I'm just overly sensitive from NCIS. And Hotch/Prentiss shippers who say that they should just get together, already.

But to clarify; I love the friendships on the show! It's one of the things I absolutely adore about CM. :-)

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2012-02-15 08:14 pm (UTC)(link)
See, I'm a shipper, but I think it should remain firmly fanon. CM is not a shipping show. It is a case-based and team-based show. Giving us relationships between main cast members would be weird on this show. So, while i do ship, I like things the way they are with it being firmly platonic and friendshippy.

Yes, the friendships on this show are awesome. That is one of its strengths.

I agree. The exception is that I love Garcia/Kevin. But by and large? I don't really want or need romance on-screen. Mention boy- and girlfriends, by all means; I'm not opposed to romance. I just don't want to see it if it's not vital to the character.

I've never met a show where I've shipped or slashed so many pairings. Kevin/Garcia. Morgan/Garcia (platonic). Hotch/Reid. Rossi/Prentiss. And friendship everyone/everyone (although, really? I adore Hotch/Rossi).

[identity profile] philstar22.livejournal.com 2012-02-15 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Kevin isn't really a main character, so it doesn't bug me the way another ship would.

I only ship a few things in this fandom. I ship Morgan/Garcia, Kevin/Garcia, and any combination of Hotch/Prentiss/Rossi. Mostly I stick to gen, though. Not sure why, but for me this fandom remains about the cases and the friendships, not romance.

Yeah, but that doesn't work for me because I absolutely dislike Hotch/Beth. I just don't see why giving Hotch his balance back wasn't something the team could do. I'd rather they'd spent that time on Hotch with Jack, but... *shrugs*

[identity profile] chreesko.livejournal.com 2012-02-15 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's kind of poetic this way, though. It's like the ultimate "Fuck you" to Foyet. He already trusted the team pre-Foyet, so while having them be the vehicle to restore that balance would be nice, it wouldn't have the same poignance for me as having Hotch get to a point where he can trust a stranger outside of the team again. In a way, making him rely on the team and Jack for his emotional arc rather than an outsider would have meant that Foyet succeeded in destroying an important part of him that he never got back.

What push? They've had about one scene alone together all season!

Like, I said, it's entirely possible I'm just overly sensitive from years of NCIS. And Hotch/Prentiss fans who think they should 'just get together already'. That kind of talk makes me twitch. I don't particularly want romance on a crime-show. :-(

[identity profile] citjara.livejournal.com 2012-02-15 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Ah, NCIS is a Bellisario Show. He's a notorious ship pusher. Fan havoc for years on JAG, especially every other year, when DJE was up for a new contract!

[personal profile] dhae_knight_1 2012-02-15 10:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, Tiva happened wholly post-Bellisario, so I don't know if I can blame it on him. :-(

[identity profile] citjara.livejournal.com 2012-02-15 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Does he not Exec produce it anymore?

[personal profile] dhae_knight_1 2012-02-15 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
In theory, yes. In practice there was apparently a whole big fallout between Bellisario and Harmon, so they got a new showrunner, effectively. It's my understanding Bellisario hasn't actually been involved in the direction of the show since season 2.

I don't feel the H/P push is coming from the show because otherwise why throw Beth into the picture? It's coming from the FANS of that ship who are going insane about Beth's existence and insisting that she's horrible, etc. That's what's kind of pushed it into the forefront, IMO.

Good point. Although I'm not Hotch/Prentiss I also don't like Hotch/Beth, so...

The entitlement-fans annoy me. I, as a fan, don't *deserve* anything more than what I'm already getting; a good show. I don't *deserve* seeing Hotch with Jack. I won't blame the show for not showing me Reid with his mom because I don't *deserve* that.

Then again, I'm noromo on-screen, so although I wouldn't mind another Hotch/Reid hug, I really don't *want* anything more than friendship. I'm perfectly capable of turning that romantic off-screen. And that way I can turn it into what I want. Once it's canon, it's kinda locked in stone.

God, thanks for your voice of reason. You're right: we don't deserve anything. Do I ship H/P? Yeah, but because I love their chemistry (not that Brewster doesn't have crazy chemistry with everyone), and it's fun. I've never expected anything. Other than generally keeping characters authentic and true to themselves, I don't really feel I have a right to expect anything. I mean, there's a thin line between maintaining artistic integrity while trying to satisfy the fanbase and outright patronizing us -- a line I don't think the writers, at least, have ever crossed. So, while some things have popped up I've not been happy with, I've had to stop short of complaining (though, Beth is an exercise in discipline, I have to say...).

[identity profile] citjara.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 06:35 am (UTC)(link)
Wow, am I glad I'm not seeing any of that drama because I actually like playing with H/P in my thoughts, although I'm on Ship Switzerland, just like you are.

And there's a good point about NOT having something on the show. We don't want it carved in stone... leave it to our FF :)

I watched 3x01 last night and thought Prentiss would've been an amazing team lead.

I think what really made me sit up and take notice was David Hewlett taking about his sister coming to him and saying; "I want to be an actor, too, what do you think?" and he'd outright advised her not to do it. Because male actors have it tough enough, going to auditions and getting told over and over again; "you're not what we're looking for." but for women; if you're not under 30, skinny, gorgeous and blonde - well, your chances of getting to work are slimmed down considerably.

And the thing is that the ageism is compounded by the sexism. It's far, far easier for a man to get a part once he's out of his 20's, than it is for a woman.

I've been watching Grimm, and the only woman on the standing cast is the girlfriend of the main character. That's crazy!

When Gidoen was written out of the show, Rossi didn't get all the screen time and was written quite differently from Gideon. He was actually easy NOT to like at the beginning, and one could justify it, too. Plus, the attention evened out a bit to the other characters, it certainly wasn't on Rossi. I think that's what made it work, too.

I loved how he was introduced as being a bit of a dick. I think that was why, when he began redeeming himself and folding into the team, it was suddenly so much easier to like him. Characters without flaws are bloody boring. I think that was what bugged me most about Seawer. She just seemed so... Flawless. :-(

[identity profile] citjara.livejournal.com 2012-02-16 07:18 am (UTC)(link)
It prevented them from shoving him down our throats as the new kid in town who was the new star of the team.

Precisely! All his books and experience was less important than the fact he couldn't figure out how to work with a team. I loved that the writers made it okay for the viewers to ot warm to him instantly, because the team didn't.
