Not sure if this has been posted (I checked and I couldn't see it anywhere), but there's an interview with KV on the EW website here in which she talks about AJ being fired.

Here is what it sounded like she wanted to say:

"They fired my friends, and it's a backstab, and we are all angry, but I took the Spinoff job to keep myself from being fired too. If I'm on both shows, its harded to get rid of me and I need work just like everyone else."

She most likely did it because she doesn't work as much as the rest of the cast. She usually finishes shooting her parts in 1-2 days. It just makes sense to take the spinoff job.

It sounded to me like she already had the second job, or knew she was getting it, when A.J. was fired. I really don't think she was worried about getting fired.
