"Lauren" Question

I just finished watching "Lauren" - I know lol but I wasn't able to watch it yesterday and my DVR only "partially" recorded it *rolls eyes*.

Since this may contain spoilers for this episode and possibly a past episode from season....2 or 3 maybe, please look under the cut for my question.

I considered looking through the post that was focused on this episode, but there are 631 comments lol and I'm not sure I have that kind of patients.

In "Lauren" they mention numerous times the fact that the only family Emily had was the team. Then, at Emily's funeral, the only people who were the main focus was the team and you really couldn't tell who anyone else was.

So, my question is what's up with Emily's mom? I know we met her in that episode about the Russian family. Even if Emily isn't really dead, wouldn't it be kind of weird if her mom wasn't at the "funeral"? Did something happen to her mom that I'm forgetting or didn't know about?

Just wondering if anyone noticed this and could tell me if I'm just being stupid and forgetting something.

In Valhalla Emily mentioned that she is in Italy.
I think they probably told her that Emily is alive, she is her mother after all, and she is an ambassador, but she should have been at the funeral anyway.

We don't see the whole crowd so I guess they thought why pay the actress when we can just assume that she is there somewhere off camera.

You know, I was wondering this, too & thought maybe I'd missed that she had died! I'm glad you asked :)

I had the same idea, but when rewatching it I saw the camera never even takes a sweep of the "crowd" so to speak, so I'm assuming that's where Ambassador Prentiss is. There's one partial shot where you see someone sitting in the typical "mourning mother" position on TV, so I just like to imagine that's her.

Or she had an assignment so important in Italy she couldn't come (in Honor Among Thieves it clearly showed her job was more important than her family).

Me neither, but in films or series when there's a funeral, you often see the family on the right, below, sitting, with mom with her legs sideways as if to huddle close with someone next to them - I thought I spotted a quick glimpse of that ;)

You know, she may be "duty first". Some people are like that ... it doesn't strike me as terribly strange.

Most funerals provide chairs for the immediate family if the graveside service may take some time. CM isn't known for their consistency when it comes to family so, like everyone else, I just assume they meant for us to assume the ambassador was there and simply not seen.

Actually, they never say where her father is, either- whether he's dead or alive, still married to her mother or not. It's all pretty vague with her.

Me, I wonder who's taking care of her cat now.

We don't know anything about Prentiss's dad. And Emily's mom was probably in the crowd - all we saw was the close-ups of the team. I'm sure she was there. And I don't think she would know that Emily was alive - it was established in this episode that Emily's family is the team. If she's not close enough to her mother for her mom to have been in danger...I don't see the reason for telling her the truth and putting a target on her back.

I noticed her Mom wasn't there, I also noticed Strauss wasn't there either..one would think her mother and her Section Chief would have been at the "fauxneral". It would have been nice to mention what happened to Sergio her cat too, and was I the only one that thought the teams reaction to JJ arriving was odd?. I would have expected a chorus of JJ !! and probably a running hug from Garcia...They all just stared at her. Hmmm.

I think they were distracted by worrying about Emily. And while I really wanted a few 'hey, you're back' scenes with her, I'm sort of glad they didn't stop and break the tense mood of the episode with them. Also, it allows my fanfic muse to go on happily assuming that they meet every weekend the team's in town, so it's not like they haven't seen her in months, and their reactions are totally normal and professional.

True this :)

I wondered this too. I'm sure she was problably somewhere the camera didn't hit at the funeral. And hopefully she was told the truth. However, saying that the team was emily's only family was a bit strange.

The team was her Family, her mother and other blood relations, if any, are just Relatives.

That's how I took it to mean, but then again that's how I am about people in my own life so it makes perfect sense to me. *shrug*

Except that we never got the impression of extrangement in the episode where we saw her mother. So, to me, it doesn't really fit with what we already know. Yes, she and her mother have issues in their relationship, but nothing from what we saw extreme enough to make it seem like they were "just blood relations".

Hmmm, I may have to try and watch that again, because I did get that impression. From what I remember they were a bit uncomfortable and awkward with each other, at least until the very end of the episode when they make a peace of sorts.
Then the comment Prentiss made to Hotch in another episode about how much she hated politics and how it destroys families. Struck me as being very much spoken from experience.

And now am very curious and may just have to watch some CM this weekend. *g*

My biggest question wasn't whether or not her mom was there, although in my mind Emily has always kind of seemed like she raised herself because her mom always put her job before anything else, and I think she may have made a few mentions to this effect throughout the series. That's always been my impression at least.

My biggest question was where was the American flag on her coffin? We've seen every cop on this show, who was killed, have an American flag covering their coffin. I just found that really strange.
