Rachel Confirms s7 Casting Spoilers

I'd like to take this opportunity to say that whether or not you loved/hated Ashley Seaver, Rachel Nichols as an actress is a human being who did not deserve to be sidelined liked this. She obviously loved her job and her co-workers, and is justifiably upset about this.

CBS pulled the same stunt with Rachel that they did with AJ and Paget last year. Please keep that in mind. CBS might have fixed one of the symptoms by bringing AJ and Paget back, but they have in no way solved the problem of treating their actresses as disposable.

If you can, please send Rachel some love on twitter.

Thank you for pointing this out. And Mantegna's character isn't popular with the fandom, and is less popular than Prentiss and possibly JJ as well. But they didn't even consider firing him. So yes, there is sexism involved.

So...they planned for AJ and Paget's contracts to be up at that time, so they could get out of firing Joe?

No, they chose to fire people in the year that the ladies contracts were up rather than any of the men's. They chose to fire two female characters rather than one female and one male. They chose to hire a new actress to replace the two and then to fire her when they realized that they had made a mistake. Honestly, it seems pretty obviously sexist to me, and I'm just not getting how that isn't obvious.

I can't see any one exec spending time actually plotting and scheming to accomplish this supposed goal. It's simply illogical. I mean, there are sixteen shows on CBS (discounting news, talk, and reality shows, though from my understanding, those are also contracted positions) and all of the actors have contracts. Average regular cast size is around five or six actors, with shows like Criminal Minds, the CSIs, HIMYM and the like having more.

That's at least a hundred people with contracts, give or, less likely, take a handful. And a third of them, at least, are actresses. So around 30 actresses, with 3 getting screwed royally that year. AJ, Paget and I'm including Liz Vassey, though I only include her because I am unsure of all the details. From what I recall, her contract was up and they decided not to renew it. Which is prerogative, as that's what contracts are there for to begin with. Melina, with CSI:NY simply couldn't come to an agreement in negotiations, which isn't a case of getting screwed at all. If they were simply being sexist, then they would've probably been a lot less blatant about it. Kicking two actress off of two different shows would've been a much smarter move and still accomplished their evil goals.

So, really, if I were going to jump to any conclusion, then, the obvious one for me would be that for some reason the network just didn't like Paget and AJ. Which, while possible, doesn't make a whole lot of sense either.

As for not firing a male and female, you yourself just said that none of the male cast member contracts were up. Breaking contracts is usually expensive, and no thinking executive worth their salt would find that to be a good idea. Particularly not when the cuts are supposedly to save money since that would be counter productive as all hell.

And considering that the economy is still in the crapper, how anyone thought that the return of AJ and Paget wouldn't result in the termination of Nichols, is beyond me.

All that said, if any of the conjecture is true, from manner of firing to reason, then yes, it sucks and yes, they should be called on it. But from where I'm sitting, that's a big if.
