Wow, was this the first time it was mentioned?

Because it threw a lot of assumptions out the window.

I thought of Gideon as the lone guy who was in the army and Rossi is The Writer who doesn't get his PTSD thing.

...and now I have even more reasons to ship Rossi/Gideon, huzzah!

It was also mentioned in 5x03 and 7x03 as well. Maybe other episodes, too, but those are the only two I can remember. IIRC, it's hinted that he joined the military to avoid getting sucked into the mob.

This is just my personal interpretation, but I'd be shocked if any of the team members didn't get the PTSD thing. The job aside, they've all suffered some sort of major trauma before joining the BAU (Rossi's dead baby, Morgan's abuse, JJ's sister's suicide, etc.), so they probably all had first-hand experience even before the traumas the job heaped upon them. Hunting serial killers isn't really the sort of thing that emotionally undamaged people do (within the universe of the show, at least. I have no idea about the real people who do this for a living).

Thanks.

Yeah, everyone had angst, but like, different? In fact, having pains might make it harder to sympathize or understand someone with /different/ pains sometimes.

/IIRC, it's hinted that he joined the military to avoid getting sucked into the mob./

I really like Rossi, he's had just enough bad boy vibe in him to be sexy, not actually bad in a way that makes you feel guilty for liking him. Reminds me a bit of Ray in Due South.

I doubt the damage we see in Gideon came from his Army days - they would have been, what, 35 or 40 years ago? I think his damage is more from the cumulative effects of all those gambles he's taken, especially the times he's lost.

And there's no reason Rossi shouldn't "get" the PTSD thing - it's not exclusive to the military. You can trust me on this one; those of us in public safety type jobs - cops, firefighters, paramedics, and so on - are very subject to it. I'm sure there are others.
