Criminal Minds Scoop: Big Love's Jeanne Tripplehorn Joins Cast as a Series Regular

Criminal Minds has big love for Jeanne Tripplehorn — the venerable CBS procedural has tapped the actress to join the cast as a series regular.
Tripplehorn, who fills the void left by longtime castmember Paget Brewster, will play “a new profiler,” confirms Minds exec producer Erica Messer. “Her character will be introduced in the [Season 8] premiere.”
Tripplehorn is coming off of a five-year run on HBO’s Big Love. She recently veered into comedic territory via a multi-episode arc as Dermot Mulroney’s manipulative ex-wife on New Girl.

The spoiler cut worked fine for me.

I don't know who this woman is, but I don't envy her. She's got some mighty big shoes to fill.

I'm glad they are having a new cast member, as much as I'm really going to miss Prentiss. I like the gender balance being at least almost equal on the show.

Still going to miss Paget Brewster a ton, but Jeanne Tripplehorn is old enough to be a plausible addition to the BAU, and I also really like her as an actress. So, a hopeful yay from me.

I was kind of hoping they would skip the obvious Prentiss replacement. Guess TPTB got their way over Erica Messer. Again.

Will you ever learn, CBS?

I'll miss Prentiss like a missing thing, but Jeanne Tripplehorn is a good actor and her casting means her character's unlike to be a Prentiss clone. I'll be interested to see what they write for her and how she fits into the team.

Agree 100 per cent. She's a really strong performer. Should be interesting.

Totally agree! My problem with Seaver was the unbelievable way in which she got into what is supposed an elite squad of the FBI, so I'm really hoping for the best here :)

I was hoping they wouldn't do this, but it seems Erica Messner was forced to do this. She's on the record saying that she didn't want an new addition but that the network was forcing her to go for it.

JT will have it difficult in this fandom, Prentiss was such a loved character.

I know nothing about JT, but I do like that fact that she's not some pretty 25-year-old! I have hopes that the character they write for her has a good BAU qualification and - maybe - a somewhat believeable history. At her age, she could have a family/grown children or at least teenage children.

I love Paget and will miss Prentiss like crazy, but hey, Jeanne Tripplehorn. Good choice. Top shelf as far as the potential actresses out there go!

I'm surprised more people haven't seen Big Love. Or even New Girl. Jeanne Tripplehorn is a great actress.

I also like that they are attempting to keep some kind of quasi-gender balance on the team.

While I'm going to miss Paget like mad, I'm glad to see they have cast someone who can hold her own to play the new profiler. There needs to be the gender balance. I'm also pleased they didn't select some cute young thing but have brought in someone who could stand up to Strauss and won't take crap from Rossi or Hotch. My hope is that they don't try to write her to be a little lamb lost in the woods like Seaver was.

I like the fact that Jeanne is not a pretty young thing but is a mature beautiful woman. This could be very interesting to see with Director Strauss. One thing I loved about Prentiss is that she could make "ma'am" sound like she was calling Strauss a bitch for her manipulations. I hope to see that with this new character. I like the thought of someone who could be prove to be a challenge for Rossi, perhaps someone whose experience in profiling falls in between Hotch and Rossi in terms of length of time. We shall see. :)

I know nothing about her, but it's great (and pretty ironic, too) that they're casting a slightly older woman. A bit disappointed that her character is a profiler, though. I was hoping for a new press liaison.

I was hoping they wouldn't replace Prentiss so quickly, but meh. I'm glad it's a middle-aged woman instead of someone like agent Seaver.

I always think this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0120148/quotes?qt=qt0195521 when I see her..... *L*

If wiki is to be trusted, the new character is named Sasha McFarlene.
