I made a list about how many episodes with the death of the Unsub.

The statistics came out like this:

6 times an unsub was shot or otherwise injured, but survived (for example in Derailed)
43 times the unsub was arrested normally, without major injury
37 times at least one unsub was killed (this covers cases even when there were more than one unsub and only one was killed like in The Tribe)
2 times unsubs escaped at the end of the episode

Out of the deaths

13 Unsubs were killed by BAU members
12 Unsubs were killed by unrelated persons, from bystanders (random truck driver in Paradise) to family members of the victims (Hell and Back)or fellow criminals (Honor Amongst Thieves)
8 Unsubs were killed by Swat teams or Cops of the Week
0 Unsubs were killed directly by a victim (in Open Season I presume that the younger brother survived)
9 Unsubs committed suicide

Of the BAU related deaths we have at 2 kills:

Hotch
- Catching out (train jumping killer, shoots him while killer fights with Morgan on a moving train)
- The Tribe
ETA: Might also have been the shooter in Real Rain

Though Hotch also fired at unsubs and injured them in Compulsion and in Psychodrama (there might be more, but I'm sketchy on the injuries only; so I could be missing non lethal shots fired for a bunch of characters).

Elle:
- Aftermath (Elle's sketchy shooting of the rapist)
- Extreme Aggressor (Pilot episode)

Reid
- LDSK
- Revelations

In Legacy, Hotch, Morgan and Reid were all seen shooting and it was unclear who fired the lethal shot.

At three kills we have
Morgan
- Lessons Learned (terrorist on the roof of the mall)
- Charm and Harm (shoots killer who fights victim in the water)
- Open Season (shoots second unsub while he attempts to shoot victim with a bow and arrow)

With 1 we have:

JJ (Penelope)
Rossi (About Face)
Emily (Lo-Fi)

Apparently season 2 was the deadliest (12 deaths), followed by 4 (10 deaths), 1 (8 deaths) and 3 (7 deaths). Though it has to be pointed out that 3 was also the shortest season with only 20 episodes.

Yes, it's very possible that my list is riddled with mistakes ;) But I hope I was able to give a rough impression.

I absolutely love that you made this list! I, too, love lists. And Emily really hasn't killed anybody yet? Wow. She is the only one with a clean record so far, impressive.

Ooops, I've been corrected that Emily killed a guy in Lo-Fi (the subway shooting terrorists who turned into the ambulance blow up terrorists).

Does that mean that Gideon is the only "clean" one? Or am I missing one of his as well?

Reid also killed the unsub in LDSK. :) Shot him in the head when the unsub went for Hotch.

Oops, you're absolutely right. I remembered it wrong and accidentally attributed the LDSK kill to Hotch rather than Reid. Turns out that Hotch, Reid, Elle and Morgan are all tied at 2 kills.

Honestly, and don't take this the wrong way, if this is what you do when you have too much time on your hands I hope you always have time on your hands. XD I absolutely love these kinds of trivia factoids, so I'm totally adding this to my memories so I can revist it!

I have to admit that while making it I was thistempted to make some sort of crazy masterlist charting all friendship or character background moments (like Elle reveals her father was a police man or JJ reveals she's from a small town or Morgan tells Reid his nightmare), or at a list of all "character" episodes where a character is given a paricular spotlight (like Reid in Memoriam or Morgan in Profiler, Profiled) but then I decided that that was too crazy after all ;)

Heh, maybe several people were doing it together? Like everybody gets assigned a bunch of episodes to look it, so not one person has to do all the rewatching? Though wouldn't there be major disagreements of what constitutes a significant moment (like "Hotch gives Morgan a really intense stare" or "Morgan doesn't want to leave the room during a Reid scene" or "Hotch and Prentiss spend a lot of time driving together in a car" or at what point does an intense convo about an unsub constitute a moment?)?

It's odd. I actually really dislike ship quarrels, but I think it would be very interested how many lets say personal conversation or A saves B moments a pairing gets (for example, has Reid had more personal conversations with Gideon or with Hotch? Has Emily had more with Rossi or with Morgan?) or even just how they distribute across a season "season X was a really good season for Character A/relationship B/friendship C".

I would totally love to be involved in a project like that! The relationships between all the characters just make the show so engaging, and while I honestly don't ship any of the characters together at all (aside from the 'canon' ships, like Garcia/Kevin and JJ/Will, because they make JJ and Garcia HAPPY) I'd still totally love to tackle something like that.
I just graduated university and don't have a full time job yet or anytime soon so I totally have the free time for it!

Watching some of the older episodes, it made me think that it would be very fascinating to have a statistical breakdown of which characters "team up" the most. (like "Prentiss and Hotch do a double interrogation" or "Morgan and Reid crack the computer password together").

I really wish CM had one of those obsessively maintained wikis like Lost or Star Trek. *goes off to search*

Oh, and by the way, I love this kind of trivia lists. I actually would have swear that the number of unsubs killed by members of the team was bigger, so it was a surprise for me :P

Same for me. Though I actually expected a higher number of "killed by Swat" simply because early on they seemed to do so many "Stupid Swat fires too early, tragically killing the suspect when the BAUs were already on the brink of talking him down" episodes.

Maybe I'll do a trivia list on how many male vs. female, white vs. non-white and how many solo vs. partner vs. group unsubs there are. Because on the look through it seemed to me that CM seems to have a relatively high number of partner killers.

Plus, I just ordered the DVDs from a German profiler show (don't ask...) and while rereading the episode list there, it seems that that show for example had a disproportionately high number of female villains.

Ah, good point. That's one of the episodes I sort of skipped on the look through because I figured it was "Part 1". I forgot that that too had a larger group of killers (I generally get fuzzy with larger groups anyway).

I can see why that might happen because it wasn't really a "main" or even a named unsub. There wasn't even another team member in the scene but a COTW instead.

I think Prentiss shot the Unsub in the end of 'Legacy' but Hotch shot at the same time as well so we can't say who fired the lethal one.

Excellent list! I've always liked it how the BAU rarely use their guns. When compared to basically any other crime show out there, the number for those is significantly higher. In Criminal Minds, it's the brains & outwitting the unsub that count, not how fast your trigger finger is.

Ohhhh, good one! Totally didn't catch that since both Hotch and the sniper were aiming at the unsub? I guess it just seems a bit odd since it seemed quite obvious that the unsub was about to surrender? But maybe Hotch was erring on the side of caution.

If you look closely, you will see that some smoke comes out of Hotch gun after the shot was fired.

As for why Hotch did shot, it goes back to what Gideon said about one of the first case he did work with Hotch and that Hotch had talked the unsub into surrendering only for him to go free and killing a boy later on.
