When will the Criminal Minds producers loosen up Hotch? — Roly
ADAM: To hear executive producer Ed Bernero tell it, they don't need to loosen him up at all. "We all believe that Hotch's stoic nature, his strength, his resolve, is one of the glues that holds the show together," Bernero says. "His unflinching portrayal of a true-believer G-man allows all the other characters to be a bit eccentric...  because there is a representation of the real FBI in Hotch." That said, Bernero promises the show's 100th episode will give fans a completely different view of Hotch.

I can't find the exact article, but I read the other day in TV GUIDE that Ed Bernero will never work with Mandy again after he failed to show for the season 3 table read.  He also said that nobody on the cast misses Mandy and that Mandy really hurt the whole team at CM.  Basically, he had nothing nice to say.  When I find the article or link, I'll post it.

I find the Mandy comments interesting. I makes me think of how John Barrowman came out about two years after working with Christopher Eccelston on the first new season of Doctor Who and said Chris was really a stick in the mud, basically, and was horrible to work with and he enjoyed working with David Tennant much more enjoyable. Although, Ed's comments are less personal than John's and indicate Mandy wasn't very well-behaved professionally.

Maybe they weren't allowed to say anything at the time, but it kind of ruins the show(s) a bit for me to hear there was tension off screen. I'm not saying everyone has to be happy go lucky 100 percent of the time, but still.

I remember seeing that article on CMF last week or the week before.

I've heard a few comments about MP being a bit of a diva, so it's really no surprise. Really, I don't care how much the show you're on offends you, there's better and far more respectful ways to get off it. Ways that don't involve screwing your coworkers over.

Mandy's a talented actor but he's done this twice before-- bailed on shows that were well-received, Dead Like Me and Chicago Hope. I was disappointed at first, but ultimately unsurprised.

Personally, I like how the team is on more equal footing now that Gideon is gone. He sort of overpowered the team dynamic we have now

I guess Mandy's left shows before and that he is a bit of a Diva, so really I don't think it was a surprise to anybody.

Um, what is a G-man?

While I agree about Ed's description of Hotch, even the most hardcore G-men have lives outside of their job. I wouldn't want Hotch to change at work, but it would be nice to see him relax once in a while and not constantly be 'on duty'. :)

Ed's commented on this before (TV Guide, July (? '08):

Looking back on the whole experience, exec producer Ed Bernero admits Patinkin’s hasty exit was ultimately good for the show. “I’m actually glad it happened,” he says. “The whole cast gels much better now. There were times when having someone like Mandy on the show was not unlike having an alcoholic parent; you never really knew when things are going to go bad. I
realized that after he left. I would leave [work] every night fully
expecting to have to come back for some reason. That something would go
wrong. And you sort of realize after a couple of months that, ‘Wow,
everything is a lot calmer than it was.’”

Ouch!

I totally loved Gideon and I was sad to see the character go, but I am absolutely not surprised that Ed feels the way he does (not wanting to work with Mandy again). If I recall well, he said Mandy's departure did have the potential of bringing the show down. I wouldn't want to work with him again either. Not because he left but because of the way he did it.

As for Hotch, I agree with and see what he means about Hotch but I think the man needs a break. Simple as that. Just for a tiny bit.

Oh yeah I remember reading about that in this article (I guess it's the same you read): http://www.tvguidemagazine.com/feature/exclusive-mandy-patinkin-speaks-2844.html

I'm kind of proud of Ed for having the guts to say that. :)

This kind of scares me. :O

By 'different view' I'm assuming he means naked & cuddled up with Reid?
*eyes shifting*

As to MP, love him as a stage performer, his Georges Seurat was the best. Doing Sondheim perfectly gives an actor major street cred. I've heard he is challenging to work with, but worth the effort. From a producer's standpoint, though, I am in total agreement with Bernero; an actor not showing up for a table read as a way to quit, well, he burnt that bridge to ash. Glad the dynamic works better backstage. The show's ability to make the apres-Gideon transition as smoothly as it reads certainly says a lot about the talent of the writers and actors.

I am glad that I got into the show right after he left because, having now obsessively watched all of the back episodes, I like the format for the team much better. Hotch is a more balanced leader (even with the Foyet attack) and everyone gets to shine. Plus, I couldn't get over what Gideon did in 'The Fisher King'.
As to Hotch, give him a break! He deserves some happiness. And cookies.

Ya know, I've been waiting for Hotch to break down for five seasons now - I mean, breaking down like in Omnivore, only worst (or better). It may be cruel, but I really wanna see it, the tears, the fear, whatever. He lost his son, for crying out loud, can't be stone-faced 24/7 when something like that happens to you.

my guess is Foyet will kidnap Haley - maybe Jack too - and Hotch will go Angsty about it. And then kill Foyet.

Sorry I'm pretty new to the fandom, but how did they manage to make Gideon have the exit he did if Mandy just up and left one day? Was that scene where he's writing the letter already filmed, to be a cliff hanger or something? idgi.
