I sincerely don't think that's going to happen. I could be wrong, but it would be stupid to fire AJ this season, then have Prentiss and Garcia both disappear next season.
Call me cynical and jaded, but it really seems to me like they're using the character of Garcia as a consolation prize far too much. It's like they're saying, "we didn't cut out ALL the women, we still have Garcia, who's the BEST ONE RIGHT :D" and now saying, "The spin off won't TOTALLY suck, it's gonna have GARCIA WHO WE ESTABLISHED IS THE BEST LADY RIGHT :D :D :D"
It's like they're trying to bribe us into watching the spin-off (which looks like it will otherwise be spectacularly awful, judging by that pilot) by waving a fan-favorite character in front of our faces. ~Loooook, maybe she'll finally get some more character developmeeeent oooooooh~~ You'll never know if you don't watch the spin-off like you said you wouldn't~~~
Oh good. I was starting to feel like a pariah. I have a feeling there are more people who would watch it for her who are just afraid to admit it because there is so much vitriol coming from the people still adamantly hating the idea.
'Vitriol' is a little strong. I think people are just genuinely shocked and saddened by all that's happening. Also, it's far too much of a coincidence that goings on with CM are concordant with developments for the spinoff.
It's a show. it's horrible, it's sad, but it's a show. I bet the same thing happened when Mandy/Gideon left, when Elle left... but it happens, and sometimes the show is still just as good, sometimes it's not.
I bet the same thing happened when Mandy/Gideon left, when Elle left...
the difference here is, lola and mandy both left the show voluntarily. people were bummed, yes, but you really can't get too upset if the actor wants to move on to something else, you know? whereas the latest shenanigans aren't anything anyone asked for, and the fans and the cast were blindsided by the whole debacle. like flameturnedblue said, the timing of all these developments has a lot of fans smelling a rat, and they're understandably not happy.
Yes, it's a show, and I'm not losing sleep over it, but it's something I (and a lot of other people) care about. I reserve my right to feel upset and cranky.
antoinettemason has already hit the nail on the head re: the comparison of the current scenario, and what happened with Mandy and Elle. Not really comparable.
The point here is not people bawwwing over the departure of their favorite characters. It never has been. antoinettemason has summed up nicely why the situations with Elle and Gideon are not the same thing and why the spinoff tends to get dragged into this whole kerfuffle. People are upset b/c CBS's actions with AJ and Paget (along with their actions on other shows) strongly imply a broader social issue (sexism) that goes way beyond fannish butthurt.
The problem with everything that's been happening lately is that CBS crapfest engaged some really ugly implications about sexism, and that's where 90% of the wank is coming from. I highly doubt anyone feels that strongly about fannish opinions. The strong feelings are b/c for those fans, it's not about fandom but a broader social issue that would bring about passionate responses in any situation.
I don't think people are purposely trying to rain on the parade of those who are enthusiastic about the spinoff. If someone said "I'm excited about seeing Garcia on the spinoff" most who disagree would shrug and move on. But if someone said "I'm excited about seeing Garcia on the spinoff and idg why everyone's so upset" then people will naturally be inclined to explain why they're upset, and all this ugly stuff starts coming out again and it's just going to be yet another wankfest.
I realize that, and I agree. I was pissed about what happened, and I do believe that CBS' actions, not just with CM, but with several other shows, have been sexist. Not too long ago, I wrote an angry opinion piece at the Two Cents about that very thing.
I didn't say I didn't understand people's anger. If it came across that way, it's not what I meant.
Oh, I in no way meant to come off like I was singling you out. I was making more of a general statement--sadly, I have seen sentiments like that around in which some fans sincerely don't get that it isn't about people being butthurt over their favorite characters. smdh
That said, I honestly do not believe anyone would attack you over having a positive opinion of the spinoff. Yeah, there's a lot of negativity with regards to it, but it's been mostly directed at the show itself and not other fans.
Besides, talk of feeling like a pariah for having an unpopular opinion kind of makes me eyeroll hard (no offense) b/c I have had one in every fandom I'm in--I seem to have a knack for choosing as my favorite the female character the majority of the fandom hates. At least in CM fandom, I can honestly say the only place I've ever been attacked for my Elle stanning was ontd, and well... it's ontd.
LOL I know I've not been personally attacked, and I don't expect to be. And honestly, pariah is a word that I like because it amuses me. Don't know why. Maybe because on one of my other shows there's a stupid joke about someone being a "social piranha". Anyway, it was an exaggeration, and I tend to forget that internet tone is hard to read. So, yeah.
I'll shut up now, because it's probably starting to look like I'm backpedaling. LOL
I certainly get why fans with unpopular opinions would be hesitant to post them, but I've also found that once someone does, other fans with that same opinion come out of the woodwork, and you might find that opinion isn't as unpopular as you thought (or at least you know you're not alone lol).
I was actually a little surprised that there wasn't more than like two people who said they would watch it in this case. *shrug*
I'm not afraid of having unpopular opinions, or I wouldn't have written this. In my last fandom, I wrote a pairing with one of the most popular characters paired with one the fandom was generally disgusted by. Heh. I'd get maybe one comment on every three posts.
What made me hesitant here is that I was so firmly and adamantly in the other camp not too long ago. I hate that. I hate it when something makes me flip-flop. lol. I will never say I'm eating my words, because I still stand behind everything I said, but when the facts change, we all reevaluate.
I'm not interested in watching the spinoff or the original now. It seems like a cynical ploy to get people who were swearing off the spinoff after the casting debacle to give it a try. I think Kirsten, and Garcia, are being used.
I think they're trying to replicate what they did with Abby on NCIS/NCIS:LA, having Garcia do double duty on both shows. While I'm happy for Kirsten getting more work, I have mixed feelings about the way it's being done. I am also uncomfortable with the way Kirsten is being used by CBS to ward off accusations of sexism after the AJ/Paget debacle as well as an incentive for a spinoff that happens to have only one female character (whose role was pitifully small and forgettable in the backdoor pilot).
If Garcia is still on the original, I'll watch it. But the spinoff remains irrelevant to my interests.
i'm kinda relieved and kinda mad. still won't be watching the spin-off unless you guys say it's worth watching (yes, you'll be my "focus group" lol ), but i'll give the original show a chance still.
i don't know why they think it will ease the accusations of sexism to use the same character twice, it just says they can't find another woman because there aren't interesting female characters out there, so they're gonna recycle one that is popular.
I don't buy into the 'CBS is doing this to try to make people think they're not sexist' idea. I think they are just trying to get people who watched the original to give the spinoff a chance. They've done too much sexist stuff this season to even try to put a little bandaid on it like that. I have a feeling they are just going to wait for all the sexism anger to die down rather than try to address it.
I actually kind of agree. I don't think that CBS is deliberately trying to slight female viewers so much as they just dgaf about them and either don't realize or don't care what their actions imply. That said, I do understand how people could believe CBS is trying to use KV/Garcia as a consolation prize for fans, because the timing of everything is just extremely sketchy. I'm hesitant to jump to conclusions b/c I don't know the whole story and take everything I read on the Internet with a grain of salt (and yes, this includes actor tweets and claims by Internet fans who claim to "be in the industry"), but I do believe that this is a profound case of Viewers are Morons (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ViewersAreMorons). WARNING: TV Tropes link--you will be sucked into the vortex!
you know what? I'm gonna watch it now, simply FOR her. I understand that this was probably the CBS master plan and they're now rubbing their hands with glee but hey-ho. If necessary I'll record it and skip through episodes for Garcia!moments.
I love Garcia, I love Kirsten and both character and actress (espeically) deserve my lovin/support.
I agree that this was a master plan, of sorts. But I also love and support Janeanne Garofalo and Kirsten. So I have mixed feeling, but I'll give it a chance.

I LEAVE TOWN FOR A COUPLE OF DAYS AND THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS?!?!?!
How come she's joining the spin-off?? Wait, does that mean she is ALSO out from the original show?
Okay, I think they're trying to replace the original with that sucky spin-off, people, I'm not watching either of them if Garcia's out.
No more!
