The problem with everything that's been happening lately is that CBS crapfest engaged some really ugly implications about sexism, and that's where 90% of the wank is coming from. I highly doubt anyone feels that strongly about fannish opinions. The strong feelings are b/c for those fans, it's not about fandom but a broader social issue that would bring about passionate responses in any situation.
I don't think people are purposely trying to rain on the parade of those who are enthusiastic about the spinoff. If someone said "I'm excited about seeing Garcia on the spinoff" most who disagree would shrug and move on. But if someone said "I'm excited about seeing Garcia on the spinoff and idg why everyone's so upset" then people will naturally be inclined to explain why they're upset, and all this ugly stuff starts coming out again and it's just going to be yet another wankfest.
I realize that, and I agree. I was pissed about what happened, and I do believe that CBS' actions, not just with CM, but with several other shows, have been sexist. Not too long ago, I wrote an angry opinion piece at the Two Cents about that very thing.
I didn't say I didn't understand people's anger. If it came across that way, it's not what I meant.
Oh, I in no way meant to come off like I was singling you out. I was making more of a general statement--sadly, I have seen sentiments like that around in which some fans sincerely don't get that it isn't about people being butthurt over their favorite characters. smdh
That said, I honestly do not believe anyone would attack you over having a positive opinion of the spinoff. Yeah, there's a lot of negativity with regards to it, but it's been mostly directed at the show itself and not other fans.
Besides, talk of feeling like a pariah for having an unpopular opinion kind of makes me eyeroll hard (no offense) b/c I have had one in every fandom I'm in--I seem to have a knack for choosing as my favorite the female character the majority of the fandom hates. At least in CM fandom, I can honestly say the only place I've ever been attacked for my Elle stanning was ontd, and well... it's ontd.
LOL I know I've not been personally attacked, and I don't expect to be. And honestly, pariah is a word that I like because it amuses me. Don't know why. Maybe because on one of my other shows there's a stupid joke about someone being a "social piranha". Anyway, it was an exaggeration, and I tend to forget that internet tone is hard to read. So, yeah.
I'll shut up now, because it's probably starting to look like I'm backpedaling. LOL
I certainly get why fans with unpopular opinions would be hesitant to post them, but I've also found that once someone does, other fans with that same opinion come out of the woodwork, and you might find that opinion isn't as unpopular as you thought (or at least you know you're not alone lol).
I was actually a little surprised that there wasn't more than like two people who said they would watch it in this case. *shrug*
I'm not afraid of having unpopular opinions, or I wouldn't have written this. In my last fandom, I wrote a pairing with one of the most popular characters paired with one the fandom was generally disgusted by. Heh. I'd get maybe one comment on every three posts.
What made me hesitant here is that I was so firmly and adamantly in the other camp not too long ago. I hate that. I hate it when something makes me flip-flop. lol. I will never say I'm eating my words, because I still stand behind everything I said, but when the facts change, we all reevaluate.
