I should say I don't watch SPN regularly--I watched Katie Cassidy's eps (and yes, I am probably the only person who ever watched SPN for one of the female stars) and wasn't really impressed, tbh
Vampire Diaries is pretty tame as far as vampire shows go. IMO. It's not particularly violent and when it is, it's campy CW violence like you'd see in Smallville or Buffy. It's some pretty fun crack, as long as you turn off the part of your brain that expects historical accuracy and such (the flashbacks are as lulzy as the Buffy ones with David Boreanaz and his godawful accent). Ian Somerhalder is brilliant as Damon, and he totally steals every scene he's in. I wish he had someone as brilliant to play off of, and I think AJ could provide that. :)
