Because this is very clearly based on Hitchcock: the obsession with blondes, recreating them in his own image, the closeness to lips without actually kissing them, Oedipal and mommy issues, even the musical, sartorial, and visual motifs.

I think it's the character. She clearly is either a failed actress or someone who wanted to be an actress. She's taken into real life what she wanted to be on the stage/screen. I've met people like this in real life, and they are just as annoying as it looks.
