Ha! They are all really different in the pilot. I'm pretty sure that Kirsten was just meant to be a guest star at that point, and then they fell in love with her and her/Shemar's chemistry, so they brought her back all through season one and made her a regular in season two. :)
Hotch is that way a lot in the first season, though, tbh. He was a much lighter character (though still not like, Sunshine Lollipops And Rainbows). I really think he got darker after Elle was shot--that moment when he's wiping her blood from the walls and it really sinks in just how much this job could cost them all. And then he just gets progressively more stoic (understandably). There's also the fact that he's much lighter around Haley and Jack, too. (Though everyone ignores this because ~Haley is not to be tolerated ooooo~ *eye roll*)
