Write about CBS’ Criminal Minds (airing Wednesdays at 9/8c) — any story about it, really — and a small sect of fans is sure to surface throwing their weight behind a someday romance between BAU agents Hotch (played by Thomas Gibson) and Prentiss (Paget Brewster).
Yet at least two factors might keep the Criminal Minds coworkers from ever broaching a workplace romance. For one, Hotch’s ex-wife was killed by a serial killer not two calendar years ago. There’s also the matter of while it’s one thing to have a lunch date with Lenny, the guy who drives the delivery van at your flower shop, it’s another to mix pleasure with a business that is so not conducive to canoodling.
“I’ve read [about some fans' want for a romance] and I don’t know how to respond to it,” Paget Brewster recently shared with TVLine. “I understand it on the one hand, because in the real FBI, people work so closely and are only around each other, so chances are that sooner or later they date each other. In some ways, it’s human nature.”
But on the other hand — and this is a valid point — “The idea that Hotch and I might be fooling around in a roundtable room when children are dying somewhere is really not appealing,” Brewster notes. “It’s a really hard line to ride, so I don’t know if they’ll ever write that. I really don’t.”
Thomas Gibson was similarly bearish on the idea when we ran it by him moments later, responding, “No, no, no…. Not unless it was one of those drunken evenings between Hotch and Prentiss.” (Yeah, one of those evenings. As if!)
Besides, Hotch is not the sort “to get involved with anybody he works with,” he contends. “Come on, he can’t do that!”
“That being said…,” Gibson added, “we’ll see.”

Well, now I'm picturing Hotch/Prentiss drunkenly going at it on the conference room table.

Date: Oct. 5th, 2011 10:03 pm (UTC)As someone who leans toward Hotch/Prentiss, though, I think the writers could pull off a sort of unspoken ship, if they so chose. They could write the episodes in a way to show that the two of them may be attracted to each other, but obviously can't "get together," because Hotch still grieves for Haley.
Just my two cents. :)

Date: Oct. 6th, 2011 02:21 am (UTC)Personally, of all the team, I think a relationship between Hotch and Prentiss makes the most amount of sense, and has the most potential for a satisfying outcome. Not going to lie: I kind of ship them on the dl. That said, I just love the show regardless, and if all we get is a maintenance of the status quo in the romance department, I have nothing to complain about. What they have now works, it's rational and believable, and in a world full of television love troupes, it's kind of refreshing.

Date: Oct. 7th, 2011 12:38 am (UTC)The show toyed with Reid and JJ in early seasons (Gideon giving Reid tickets to JJ's favorite football team for a date) and now it really feels as if they're toying with Morgan and Prentiss--because that was quite the confession with Hotch, not to mention in the most recent episode.
Yes, they say they won't do this or that but the same could be said about Grissom and Sara in CSI and I believe even House and Cuddy. In the end, they want ratings and they'll do what they think will get them.
Fraternization is usually frowned upon between supervisor and subordinate so Hotch and anyone on the team would probably not happen. And given the single members of the team, the only plausible characters left are Morgan and Prentiss. ...Things that make you go hmmm.

For which everyone who shipps Hotch/Prentiss may be grateful. Our writers do great crimeshow, but after Hotch/Haley and JJ/Will getting together, it's obvious that well-written sustainable romantic relationships is not their forte. Canon Hotch/Prentiss? Would read like bad fanfic, I'm sure.

Date: Oct. 9th, 2011 09:02 pm (UTC)Having said that, I dont want or need for the writers to make anything canon....they ruin everything. I also wish the media, or whoever, would stop asking about it, its obnoxious. Its already been established there will be no canon ships amongst the major players and I think that's best for fans who ship, dont ship, and everything in between. Lets stick to the family dynamic, the good subtext, and the profiling...the rest is fun to make up but I wouldnt want to leave it in the hands of CM's often irresponsible writers.
re: Fraternization
Date: Oct. 15th, 2011 03:13 am (UTC)...but out of all of them, power-wise, Hotch and Prentiss is the last problematic. He's The Boss, officially and in how he interacts with the team...but she's the mystery spy lady with her own distinct past - he did not shape her world in any way.
Hotch and Reid on the other hand, it really would be problematic, especially in the beginning, and even now, but dang, I do like the chemistry. IRL, people are mess up. Or they are in set ups that are kinda screwy but they pick it, and some seem okay with it. (The yee old student who marry their university professor scenario, it's kinda weird but it's not remotely unknown.)
Subtext for everyone!

He posted that picture where MGG was resting his pretty head on Shemar's lap, with the caption of them getting engage, I take that to mean he ship the characters.
Then he later also post a picture of him and Joe, with the same engagement caption. Srsly, Hotch/Rossi would be cool.

Date: Nov. 13th, 2011 04:28 pm (UTC)Did you see the clip of Gibson in a corset in Psycho Beach Party? Plus, he made out with a dude in Dharma & Greg, it wasn't a brief smooch, it was a When You See My Wife, Give Her This long smooch. He's been an actor for a long time, it's just fooling around.
...and MGG was a fashion model.
*Approach: I think that's the definite line crossing. If I had to go into a coworker's office to get something, accidentally knock over a box that tumble out a notebook that opens to drawings of everybody in the office having an orgy - well, it would be awkward, but in that situation, the coworker didn't do anything wrong - everyone have the right to fantasize, in privacy. If they actually approach any of us with that or left it open on his/her desk, THEN it is sexual harassment panda time. Or if it's online, in public.
With celebrities, they are playing characters even when they are not on stage, like, during photo ops and public meet and greets. That's what I think the RPS is about, their public personalities, it's like the Stephen Colbert thing. So I don't see anything wrong with it, as long as there is a big clear but not graphic disclaimer so they'll know to back away if they stumble across it, and that fans keep in mind that these are locker room penhouse exchanges and NOT bring it up to their face evar. Not unless they ask about it.
...and so long as, considering that the locker room fantasies are about real figures, obviously the usual whumpage we do to Reid we really should be careful about writing when it stars MGG! (Oh geez, I was just on the wiki trying to find Sir Ian's opinion on this, but then I found out someone was charged for writing RPS...why? The man in question wrote a fic featuring band members of Girls Outloud being kidnapped, raped, and murder, yikes! At some point, you gotta remember that your right to SHARE fantasies never trumps someone else's sense of safety)
