i think your theory is excellent. we rarely see him hug, and on both occasions he's looked really awekward and uncomfortable.
i take that back--he glommed on to hotch at the end of revelations. but when he hugged haley when she brought jack and jj to say congratulations: awk.ward.
i swear, the more i watch some of these eps the more i love them. ♥
