Well, it's not strictly canon, and plenty of people don't know about it. May I ask what your fanfic's about? Not many people write Elle fic.
I tend to like difficult characters, too--it just seems to be the characters I think are really interesting are the characters everyone hates ;). There's a lot of hateorade in fandom for Gideon, now, and I thought Gideon was a great character (a douchebag, yes, but an interesting douchebag).
