Hotlinkers and Fanfiction

Dear CM-community

I believe you are all aware of what has been done tocattylizzieandcarinvddby the users of this German message board: Criminal Minds board

Let me just say the words theft and hotlinking again and I'm sure you'll know what I mean.

Anyway, their message board has a fanfic section. And while I dread reading what their immature minds can produce I wanted to inform you that there are links to some of your ff.net-fanfictions on that site. They present the link and a short, selfwritten summary of the story. No Author, Title, Pairing, Warnings, whatever given. I found one of my own fics there. Of course, as soon as you follow the link you get to the ff.net-page where you can see the name of the author and every information the author deemed necessary. 

BUT I wanted to give everyone the opportunity to cut their connection with the people who've done so wrong. So I will list the fanfics I found linked in that section, I will include the author's lj name. If you find one of your fics here and want the link removed from their site, please tell me. I will see what I can do then.

Those are only the ones I could trace back here for sure. There could still be some fics by authors I don't know and can't trace back to lj. If you'd like to check for yourself, have a look around here: Fanfiction Links I know most of your can't understand German, but the links are pretty distinguishable from the rest ^^

So, as I said, if you don't want them to link to your stories without giving author name and stuff, just tell me and I will tell them.

My guess is: it's a bunch of stupid kids with absolutely no clue what they are doing.

Sigh. I'm german, and I didn't get it until I looked at that site (now why did I have to do that?? My brain hurts!) I think it's supposed to be "Alles, nur das nicht" , meaning: Anything but that...

haha the so common putting words together. happens anywhere. (alot, thankyou, etc.) even in my language it happens. I'm really blunt when it comes to correting people. If it's your own language I thnk you have an obligation to spell it properly, right?

but kdis are kids. if they hotlink images like that, mispelling is far down their list of things to worry about.

I want to apologize. Don't get me wrong. It's not that I don't know the extend of their actions. Ok, to be honest, I don't know the extend, I don't host a website, but I guess I can imagine, how bad it must be right now for those who are involved. And I'm really sorry for you.

But it just shows the stupidity of those brats.
I just read their answers. They simply don't get it.
I hope they shut down their board

Well, I do get English (very well) but even those whose language IS english can't spell it. (srly, here when it's hear, were when it's wear wtf?) Srly, is that so hard to check a dictionary if you're not sure how it's spelled?

It happens in every language, every fandom. People are idiots.

There's no problem in linking fics. I, however, can imagine that some people MIGHT have a problem with being linked by those people who destroys Lizzie's site and stole pics from Jill, too.

*le sigh* I've talked to my Friend Michelle who reads/speaks/writes german. She said she would write out a very nice letter (in german) telling the people to stop hotlinking/stealing/claiming fics or else she would e-mail the board hosters and have them remove the board....

I can't belive people would do this... Gaaa

oh, don't bother being nice. They actually feel threatened and insulted by us. The admin is on holiday it's seems, so the pics can't be taken down at the moment. I'm trying to communicate with them, somehow, but they get me wrong all the time. I don't think they see what they did.

They are just like "Well, we didn't know it, now don't bother us anymore."

I should have put "very nice" in quotation marks... your welcome- my friend is working on the letter now- i'm thinking of just posting it in the general forum and seeing what happens...

They are horrible- or just plane ingorntant (not sure which is worse...) but hopfully we can get them to stop it or get them shut down!

I've had a think about this - thank you for letting me know. My stuff on ff.net is posted on a public site - so people reading it is fine - that's why I post it. But I don't really want to be associated with this site.

I am not happy about how much Jill and Lizzie have been upset and inconvenienced by these people and they need to know. They (Jill and Lizzie) put so much work into the sites they produce for other people to enjoy and having to take them down is just so unfair.

So, if you could post something along the lines of what you have already said about your fic (if I've read it correctly!) that would be cool. I think you said something along the lines of "Glad you like my fic, but your hotlinking, website destroying etc is very bad and you need to label fic correctly." (don't laugh - it has been a LONG time since I studied German!).

Its been too long since I wrote any German for me to be very eloquent in another language (I can't even remember any useful obscenties) - if you could just point out again that what they have done is wrong and that they have upset my friends, that would be good. And they need to label links correctly and accurately. Even just giving the title and author would be better than what they are currently doing.

No problem at all. I told them what you wanted to be told, hopefully they'll start getting the point soon. They said nice things about my fic, too, but I'm still pissed they didn't even make the effort to post Author and Title. And they kind of ruined the point of "Time cannot erase", because they linked to the story and said as a summary "Reid is killed in this one". Yeah, great, it's not like the reader was supposed to be shocked by that or anything. Jeez! But the comments were nice anyway.

If you want I'll send you a translation of that later on, but right now I think I'll just go to bed ^^

I had a read of what you wrote and I think I got the gist. Unfortunately, my big German dictionary has been packed away somewhere, but I got the essence of it. Thank you.

Despite the unpleasantness with this site, it has been useful to use my language brain again! I read Ephyse's fics in French and now I have been battling with German websites. I have always found French to come more naturally than German though - even though, linguistically, it is closer to English. German grammar is a nightmare though!

And I have to say, even when I was doing French and German A-level (equivalent of Abitur I think) I would not have had the confidence to write fic in another language, let alone be chatting on a German or French website. I really do admire those of you who don't have English as a first language.

Oh, forgot to say: Yeah, you pretty much got that right. I basically painted them a huge sign that says 'Hotlinking = evil' in various colors in other threads, by the way ^^

And I wouldn't laugh at you. On the contrary, I think it's great that you can read some German after all that time. It's impressive. I'd probably fail any Latin texts I came across and Latin class has only been a few years back!

huch, da bin ich ja auch dabei. Ich hab mich zuerst nicht ganz ausgekannt bei dem Post (kann man bei Ficlinks von hotlinking sprechen?), aber dann hab ich mir die Kommentare durchgelesen und mir ist ein Licht aufgegangen. : /
Ich hätte meine Fic auch gerne von der Seite runter, falls du das hinkriegst...

Ja, ich hab mir die Seite auch angeschaut. Das ist eher eine Art private Empfehlungsliste und sollte in dem Format sicher nicht online für alle zugänglich sein...
