Criminal Minds dvds - Closed Caption?
Dec. 31st, 2006 04:28 pmI was watching the first disk of CM and was disappointed that there was no closed caption in any of the 4 episodes. The box said it had CC so either the box is wrong or my dvds are defective. Can anyone who has the dvds check and let me know?
Thanks a lot and Happy New Year to all the CM fans around the world.

Date: Dec. 31st, 2006 07:04 pm (UTC)On DLM, there's the "cc" symbol for closed-captioning. There's no marker like that on my box or on my DVD sleeves. However, there's the statement "some music has been changed for this Home Entertainment version. Special Features not rated and some not Closed-Captioned".
First off, I'd heard that rumor about the music, and it tends to confirm my suspicion that music licensing is what postponed the release date of the DVDs.
Second, if there's no closed-captioning symbol, and there's no closed-captioning option in the DVD setup, why on earth do they mention that the special features may not be closed-captioned? Sloppy proof-reading on someone's part. I think they aren't supposed to be closed-captioned. Does your box have the "cc" symbol?
Third, putting the DVD in my computer required that I set the auto-capping. Oh darn. However, while getting that set up, I found a bunch of Chicago Hope caps that set me into "Oooh, shiny!" mode and delayed everything by about ten minutes while I enhanced a new CH screencap.
Is this any help at all? The "ooh, shiny!" may have scrambled my brain.

Date: Dec. 31st, 2006 07:23 pm (UTC)In PowerDVD, the option to show the closed captioning didn't show up until I started playing each ep. In the main menu, it was greyed out...and there is no CC on the box either, which is weird. But then again, these are the same people who created Hotch's back story. ;)

What program do you use for auto-capping? PowerDVD doesn't seem to have one, at least, not one that I can find and while I don't mind pressing the C button 2,000+ plus per ep...my finger gets tired! *g*

Date: Dec. 31st, 2006 07:30 pm (UTC)If I'd started to play the episode I'd have been lost. I want to watch Extreme Aggressor with the commentary on - they explain (?) some of Hotch's backstory. The "Utah" part, anyway.

VideoLAN. It's a freebie and the settings are a little tricky, but there are some great tutorials that got me started. Like this one. (http://community.livejournal.com/cap_it/3600566.html) I still have some issues with DVDs as opposed to .avi files - mainly remembering that I can use the "Navigation" menu. It's remarkably full-featured for free software. I had set it to get every 20th frame - but I missed Garcia "kissing" Reid that way. I now set it for every 10th frame and go out of my head reviewing 2500+ caps and deleting ones I don't want.

Date: Dec. 31st, 2006 07:45 pm (UTC)The Utah part? They don't explain anything about his backstory, just what they'd originally envisioned the character as, which would be the Utah part, I guess. He was supposed to be a blond haired, blue eyed Mormon! (I just posted about this in my journal.) They also mention, several times, how much they love Mandy. *G*

Thanks for the info, especially the tutorial link. I'm off to d/l it and give it a try. And if the program will cap for me, I don't think I'll mind so much editing the caps. Thanks for the tips on the frame rate to capture it at, too. :D
