You could have called, even if you thought you being physically present was making things worse. Just KNOWING she was trying would be a world of difference.

Though I do understand the concept they were trying to convey -- doing better as a Mom after the tragedy than the mistakes she made before -- it was still crap. Writing in a journal and Google do not make up for not freaking being there, ever, and is only a cheap balm for the conscience. I'd rather have seen some stated regret.
Both Will Reid and the mother stand in sharp contrast to Hotch calling Haley to talk to Jack and visiting all the damn time (even in the middle of the freaking night). THAT is what trying looks like, not this.
It really makes me wonder how the scene would have played out if Reid was there. Granted he in no way had the same personal connection to Ellie Morgan does, but he definitely would get where Ellie's anger is coming from better than Morgan...
