I loved that they made it explicit that he had problems. That he got special dispensation? Not so much. If he weren't a field agent, that'd be one thing, but damn.
Though I disagree that it makes him more of a Gary Stu, or necessarily does so. It… kinda makes him look like a bit of an ass.
