A quick note I thought you might be interested in here. Mandy Patinkin looks like he has a new vehicle, he'll be in a Showtime show about the CIA and terrorism. (I knew Gideon was a spy!)
Since CBS owns Showtime, and Patinkin guest starred on Three Rivers last year, and he'll be guest starring in some other crime drama later this month- and given the fact Mandy Patinkin and CBS are notorious for kissing-and-making-up what do you think the chances of Gideon guest starring if even in the spin-off?

Also, is it just me or does anyone start humming "Love the Way You Lie" in their head when they read about Patinkin and television shows? Who's Eminem and who's Rhianna you think?

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 05:43 pm (UTC)I'd say it's fairly probable. I wouldn't mind seeing Gideon come back to CM for one or two episodes either...I'd love to see him and Rossi subtly vying with each other.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 06:04 pm (UTC)Ohhh yea, I'd kill for a Gideon/Rossi rivalry. Who'd win you think?
Reid would have to tell the daddies to stop fighting.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 06:19 pm (UTC)I think Rossi would win but Gideon would find a way to make it about him, if that makes sense.
Reid * exasperated * I like you both very much! Now can we go get coffee?

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 06:07 pm (UTC)Bernero said he'd never work with him again if I remember correctly from an interview I read with him, but if CBS decides that's the way to go, there's nothing he can do about it.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 06:21 pm (UTC)That said, there's a lot of potential if he would come back to CM for an episode or two, especially if he came back as an unsub. That'd be sweet. However, I'm not at all expecting anything like that to happen.

Date: Dec. 11th, 2010 02:59 am (UTC)Same with the second sentiment- I can see his character rebelling against what he once stood for which could prove interesting.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 06:22 pm (UTC)And he won't be on that show for more than two seasons.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 08:25 pm (UTC)Frankly, I'm surprised any television program would be interested in risking working with Patinkin, based on his track record. Perhaps Showtime has more liberty to give him whatever it is he seems to need to stick with a television show for a good length of time.

Date: Dec. 10th, 2010 10:28 pm (UTC)Given Patinkin's track record as a Contract Houdini, I warned her to be prepared to send Al Ghul to the Lazarus Pit--to be regenerated as a new actor a la Doctor Who.

Date: Dec. 11th, 2010 03:01 am (UTC)I wonder how they'll play it. Needless to say, my interest is piqued.
But it is violence that Mandy has to be there for?
Date: Nov. 16th, 2011 09:28 pm (UTC)As Agent Gideon, he has to be standing scene after scene over actresses, intellectually knowing that it's only a dressed up scene doesn't mean your brain won't take down the realistic visual and then run with it in your nightmares later. ...and shows like CM became increasingly towards the end, and CSI, have some really graphic scenes, remember "The Big Game"? When the team note that people are downloading murder as entertainment because they don't know it's real? (For example, on Encylopedia Dramatica, there is this clip on loop of a guy blowing his brains out, I laughed about it because he looked so comical, I thought it on a show, but it turns out, it was REAL, holy crap!)
It's probably worse for a theatre actor to deal with, since theatre don't dress their violent scenes up as realistically.
A CIA director on the other hand, won't be standing over what was realistically dress up to look like someone murdered. Plus, we read about violent crimes happening close at home more than we do terrorism in the news, at which point, our brain pulls up the relevant images...rather it was real or not.
He said: "My mind has to be in that place to play those parts, that very dark place."
...and, while I'm not in acting, as a former long-time drama student, I get that. It's just acting, but for it to be good, we were told to draw on emotions from a situation as close to possible. Like, if I have to act sad, during the entire scene, I would draw on my memory of something sad, which depending on what, ranges from my memory and emotions for a dead pet - or the time I found out that my grandfather had died.
Nimoy reported that off the set of Star Trek, he has broken down crying for no reasons at all because he had to repress so much on set (although there was a period in which he was an alcoholic, but it's in the category of Things That Does Not Help).
...and this:
‘I'm very disturbed by the fact that at the end of a long day this is what people go home to watch to unwind. They watch horrible, mysogynistic, violent activity. It saddens me. There is so much else to do, so many other ideas to put into our consciousness. I'm very disturbed by it.''
...so much. He's not the only one to think so, thank goodness. In comics, a lot of fans have migrated over to the Marvel Adventures canon a few years back even though it's intended for kids (but increasingly hiding injokes for the grown ups), because so many fans were fed up with the 616 violence and always unhappy endings.
...and this is why I love Matthew Gray Gubler:
‘‘I still can't believe it. He really liked everybody, really liked the crew. The subject matter in the end I think wore him out. I think he felt ‘I don't want to die on this TV show, looking at dismal dead prostitutes'. He wanted to die singing on Broadway.''

Date: Dec. 11th, 2010 04:33 am (UTC)Reid, especially, seems very pragmatic about it in his comments in Uncanny Valley, where Gideon is mentioned not by name but it's clear who he is talking about. As for Hotch, in Reflection of Desire; he uses an offhand comment about Gideon in his attempts to comfort Garcia about not having to feel obligated to fill JJ's shoes- like he did with Gideon's.
They actually go to show how much the characters have grown and moved on in their particular paths.
Considering the articles with Bernero's comments about Patinkin's actions (which again, I'm neither condoning or condemning) are all four years old- when the action was fresh and emotions were bound to be raw, I can't comment on his stance. Neither can I on Gibson's. I have read interviews from 09 (I think, not having them bookmarked I can't cite them)where the actors have seemed to take a more level headed view on the subject.
Still, at the end of the day- TV shows are about making money- and good, bad or indifference a return of his character (and hell- even Patinkin- just think of how many times hated people have been brought back for sweeps) could provide compelling storytelling. It's probably a pipedream, but I can't deny it's an appealing one.

Date: Dec. 11th, 2010 04:48 am (UTC)But there are some of us who believe the show has lost something without his character; he's by no means an easy character to appreciate. He's a more cerebral then say Rossi; and his character was presented as having 'arrived' at where the younger character, most clearly Reid- are journeying.
Now if this is a 'I prefer one character over another,' I get that too. I actually appreciate Rossi as a character and don't think a return-of-Gideon would diminish his greatness in the least.

Date: Dec. 11th, 2010 04:51 am (UTC)Either way, I just don't think he'll come back, but I do think it could be very interesting to see the reaction everyone else had to Gideon. I think Reid & Rossi would be the ones who welcomed him least... Reid because he was hurt the most (I think) by Gideon's leaving, and Rossi because I honestly don't think he likes Gideon. Respects him, sure, but not like. *G*

Date: Dec. 13th, 2010 03:28 am (UTC)As someone else said, for better or for worse, CM is a different show from when Jason Gideon were there. He doesnt need to go backward and neither does anyone else on the show. But its awesome for him to be on television again. His guest stint on Three Rivers was amazing.

Date: Dec. 15th, 2010 06:47 pm (UTC)Let's see: Chicago Hope, Dead Like Me, Criminal Minds... all shows he bailed on. However I don't think there will be any reunion with Gideon, Elle and just like with JJ, just move on until the show ends.
Hmm, did I even answer the question?
