A quick note I thought you might be interested in here. Mandy Patinkin looks like he has a new vehicle, he'll be in a Showtime show about the CIA and terrorism. (I knew Gideon was a spy!)

Since CBS owns Showtime, and Patinkin guest starred on Three Rivers last year, and he'll be guest starring in some other crime drama later this month- and given the fact Mandy Patinkin and CBS are notorious for kissing-and-making-up what do you think the chances of Gideon guest starring if even in the spin-off?

Also, is it just me or does anyone start humming "Love the Way You Lie" in their head when they read about Patinkin and television shows? Who's Eminem and who's Rhianna you think?

* Random * I was watching Dharma and Greg yesterday and Kitty Montgomery was taking Edward to see Mandy Patinkin in concert.

I'd say it's fairly probable. I wouldn't mind seeing Gideon come back to CM for one or two episodes either...I'd love to see him and Rossi subtly vying with each other.

:D It tickles me when Thomas Gibson makes "Unit Chief" expressions as "Greg."

I think Rossi would win but Gideon would find a way to make it about him, if that makes sense.

Reid * exasperated * I like you both very much! Now can we go get coffee?

I could see him guest starring in a one/a few shows, he just doesn't seem to like the long term commitment. :)

I wouldn't mind him coming back for an episode or two. A confrontation with Reid, perhaps some subtle rivalry with Rossi. But I'm pretty sceptic given all that went down, and I'm also pretty sceptic about this new role. He hated the violence (I admit CM isn't for tender souls) but now he's going to play in a drama about terrorism?

Bernero said he'd never work with him again if I remember correctly from an interview I read with him, but if CBS decides that's the way to go, there's nothing he can do about it.

So he leaves one crime show due to 'too much violence on tv' if I remember right, and joins onto another? If he was signing onto a humor show, or something educational, or WHATEVER it wouldn't be so strange, but from the summary it sounds like another drama.

That said, there's a lot of potential if he would come back to CM for an episode or two, especially if he came back as an unsub. That'd be sweet. However, I'm not at all expecting anything like that to happen.

I don't think the any of the producers/writers (possibly cast) of Criminal Minds actually wants Mandy to guest star.

And he won't be on that show for more than two seasons.

I sure don't. I think he burned his bridges with them. I know it couldn't have been easy losing two cast members in that short of a time.

I would agree. The way he left (as much as any of us who weren't directly involved can know about it) doesn't leave much room for a return, as much as it might be interesting to know how he would interface with Prentiss, Rossi, Reid as he has grown and Hotch as he has become further shut down. (All of which would be much more interesting to me than the "secrets" this season.)

Frankly, I'm surprised any television program would be interested in risking working with Patinkin, based on his track record. Perhaps Showtime has more liberty to give him whatever it is he seems to need to stick with a television show for a good length of time.

Or he's not such a central role. I mean he looks like he's CIA director, and directors get replaced all he time, and if it happens before season 3 it would be just enough to shake things up a bit and make it interesting. It would be cool if the showrunner/writers actually plan for this.

One of my LJ friends, in the course of fantasy casting for a live-action Batman TV show, suggested Mandy Patinkin for Ra's Al Ghul.

Given Patinkin's track record as a Contract Houdini, I warned her to be prepared to send Al Ghul to the Lazarus Pit--to be regenerated as a new actor a la Doctor Who.

It would be interesting to see him for just an episode or two. I wouldn't want to inflict him on those with frustrations towards him for very long though. It would be fun to see him on the crossover though.

I'm sure it wasn't a pleasant experience for anyone. But he was still a good part of CM while he was there, and if everyone could be comfortable with a short reunion, it would give CM some good material to play with and advertise.

I want to know if this show is going to show any graphic violence, because apparently that was his reason for leaving CM. I would think a show about the CIA and terrorism on a network like Showtime would show even MORE violence than something on basic cable.

Just sayin'.

But it is violence that Mandy has to be there for?

Like okay, a terrorist blowing up a plane kills more people than an unsub who tortures his victims to death one by one, but um, seeing the second one on screen will squick me out more.

As Agent Gideon, he has to be standing scene after scene over actresses, intellectually knowing that it's only a dressed up scene doesn't mean your brain won't take down the realistic visual and then run with it in your nightmares later. ...and shows like CM became increasingly towards the end, and CSI, have some really graphic scenes, remember "The Big Game"? When the team note that people are downloading murder as entertainment because they don't know it's real? (For example, on Encylopedia Dramatica, there is this clip on loop of a guy blowing his brains out, I laughed about it because he looked so comical, I thought it on a show, but it turns out, it was REAL, holy crap!)

It's probably worse for a theatre actor to deal with, since theatre don't dress their violent scenes up as realistically.

A CIA director on the other hand, won't be standing over what was realistically dress up to look like someone murdered. Plus, we read about violent crimes happening close at home more than we do terrorism in the news, at which point, our brain pulls up the relevant images...rather it was real or not.

He said: "My mind has to be in that place to play those parts, that very dark place."

...and, while I'm not in acting, as a former long-time drama student, I get that. It's just acting, but for it to be good, we were told to draw on emotions from a situation as close to possible. Like, if I have to act sad, during the entire scene, I would draw on my memory of something sad, which depending on what, ranges from my memory and emotions for a dead pet - or the time I found out that my grandfather had died.

Nimoy reported that off the set of Star Trek, he has broken down crying for no reasons at all because he had to repress so much on set (although there was a period in which he was an alcoholic, but it's in the category of Things That Does Not Help).

...and this:
‘I'm very disturbed by the fact that at the end of a long day this is what people go home to watch to unwind. They watch horrible, mysogynistic, violent activity. It saddens me. There is so much else to do, so many other ideas to put into our consciousness. I'm very disturbed by it.''

...so much. He's not the only one to think so, thank goodness. In comics, a lot of fans have migrated over to the Marvel Adventures canon a few years back even though it's intended for kids (but increasingly hiding injokes for the grown ups), because so many fans were fed up with the 616 violence and always unhappy endings.

...and this is why I love Matthew Gray Gubler:
‘‘I still can't believe it. He really liked everybody, really liked the crew. The subject matter in the end I think wore him out. I think he felt ‘I don't want to die on this TV show, looking at dismal dead prostitutes'. He wanted to die singing on Broadway.''

I'm pretty sure Ed Bernero is not a forgive-and-forget kind of guy, so I don't see Mandy ever coming back to CM even in a guest spot. Not to mention Thomas Gibson in particular seemed very hurt by Mandy. And the writers haven't really been kind to his memory (I think of Rossi in particular making derisive remarks about how Gideon left). I don't think he'd get a warm welcome from the cast/crew, even if there are fans who would want to see it. Plus, didn't he kill Three Rivers? I don't think that's on anymore. :P

Sorry, I realized belatedly that my comment was a bit clipped. I didn't mean to sound as if liking Gideon is WRONG. But no, as much as I've loved Mandy in other shows, I just couldn't stand Gideon. Though I confess, the more Rossi we get, the more I actively dislike Gideon.

Either way, I just don't think he'll come back, but I do think it could be very interesting to see the reaction everyone else had to Gideon. I think Reid & Rossi would be the ones who welcomed him least... Reid because he was hurt the most (I think) by Gideon's leaving, and Rossi because I honestly don't think he likes Gideon. Respects him, sure, but not like. *G*

Hey, if we didn't love our characters fiercely, what would be the point of watching, right? :)

I will always love Gideon and Mandy Patinkin fiercely. Dammit, we just got rid of Showtime on our cable....I think we need to get it back. Mandy in the CIA, even as a recurring character, is something I definitely need to see.

As someone else said, for better or for worse, CM is a different show from when Jason Gideon were there. He doesnt need to go backward and neither does anyone else on the show. But its awesome for him to be on television again. His guest stint on Three Rivers was amazing.

Who wants to take bets on how long he stays on this new show? Seriously, the first time I knew it was him on CM, I wondered how long he was staying on the show. I think the Princess Bride gave him a lots of leeway years with the audience after the fact.

Let's see: Chicago Hope, Dead Like Me, Criminal Minds... all shows he bailed on. However I don't think there will be any reunion with Gideon, Elle and just like with JJ, just move on until the show ends.

Hmm, did I even answer the question?
