Hotch has nerves of steel. Assuming (and I think that's a safe assumption) that he knows Emily isn't dead, it takes some stones to be the one doing the grief counseling. He's putting himself up close and personal with the pain the lie he's keeping quiet about is causing.

And in an unrelated note...Don better not go to the mall.

They never said it, but that scene between him and JJ after she tells the rest of them she's dead, it's kind of obvious he knows.
