I like Jessica too! I don't quite understand her 180 w/Hotch (she was openly hostile before and seems like a psycho killing her sister would only make her more so) but I really like her.
I don't think Gideon was a bad person mind you, but I agree he was very "me oriented". That's actually why I don't think he would have gone away and stayed away. I think his ego would have led him to keep tabs on the team, kind of a "can they REALLY get along without me?" kind of deal. Which isn't to say he didn't genuinely care for them, but I always got the sense that Gideon was the sort of person who could only relate to people as they related back to him. A kind of emotional tunnel vision so to speak. And I think with the Reaper deal he wouldn't have been able to resist drawing a parallel between Hotch and Foyet and him and Frank.
I think everything with Gideon came back to him in some way which is why I disagreed w/Emily (who I adored) when she was telling Reid to reconsider Gideon's letter. I saw him leaving the one person he knew would be the most affected by his absence with the responsibility of (at least initially) having to break the news that he was gone as kind of passive aggressive. He got to make his explanation/apology and Reid had no choice but to accept it and (seemingly) never got to respond or get his feelings out. I think Gideon gave the gift of a goodbye to himself, not to Spencer. Sure he gave him an explanation for his leaving but the way he gave it to him was an emotional molly wop. A Dear John letter is a Dear John letter no matter how valid the reasons behind the "break up" is. I never faulted Gideon for leaving b/c like I said, I always saw him as a wee bit unstable, but the way he chose to do it left me kind of disappointed in him.
