I know they say that's how the business goes... But it's still a bit unsettling... I want her to be on the show because she wants to, not because she HAS to. Thoughts?
I think it's bull that they're still jerking her around. :/
I just want Paget to be happy with whatever she chooses to do.
And I adore her for being blunt and straight-forward about this whole mess--her past few tweets, and going back to her "financial reasons is bullshit" tweet from last summer.
And yet I was under the impression that the door was open IF she decided to come back after trying out her other show. But it figures that they basically must've given her an ultimatum. Like, we'll let you leave your contract and try the show but if it flops, you HAVE to come back.
I'm guessing that's probably exactly what happened. And then they blackballed her from ABC and CBS pilots (http://www.deadline.com/2011/02/paget-brewster-tests-sitcom-waters-as-fate-of-some-criminal-minds-actors-is-uncertain/) which severely limited her choices.
And the thing is, CBS looks like they ~learned from their mistakes~ if Paget hadn't said anything. But Paget doesn't screw around, and she tells things how they are, so it's just another example of the women on this show getting screwed with.
Very disturbing and sad. I love Paget, but I guess after how they screwed her and A.J. over, she's bound to feel angry about what went down. I hope she'll be ok with it once she's back...
It breaks my heart that Paget, after basically being discarded by CBS, is now being forced to come back to the show, while Rachel Nichols, who wanted so badly to come back next season that she cried when she was let go, isn't getting the chance to.
i honestly think this side of it is none of our business. I just want to enjoy the hour i see on TV every week and let the real people involved deal with the behind the scenes stuff.
i only meant since we don't really know whats all involved, and I'm going to assume at some point Paget agreed to the terms of her contract, i have no idea. And I didn't mean fans aren't real people, i just mean we're not involved directly. But you're right. Its hard to know whether its ok to disagree with a topic or not. I'm just expressing how i feel about it. I shall move along though:)
You don't have to "move along" because you simply expressed your opinion. I posted this so that everyone could discuss their thoughts. Of course we don't know the behind the scenes real stuff going on. But reading a tweet like that definitely causes a person to think. A lot of us don't just think of the actors/actresses as characters and only characters. It's nearly impossible to NOT associate our own feelings with what they express online, in interviews, etc.
I feel like this whole thing might come to bite CBS in the ass, at least when it comes to the next round of contract negotiations. The show does make them money, and if actors decide to walk out, that could end up hurting them.
ngl, that tweet freaked me out a bit that maybe this is only like a 1 season temporary thing and she'll be gone asap. which is kinda selfish, I know, but I can't help but want my favourite around.
I think that the organization of the tweet is really weird. It's like... loveangerlovelove. I don't quite get the placing of the sentence -- it would make more sense for the anger to come first and then the love, I guess.
Meh, me and my writeryness.
Also, Seaver leaving makes me incredibly sad. They finally made me care about her (and ship her with Gina from the spinoff), and wham! No more.
Read previous tweets too. She began insinuating that her return wasn't her own choice in a tweet she posted May 27. A random post about things she likes...and tossing "free will" in there. I didn't put it all together until reading the tweet last night.
Well, y'know, that's the thing about tweets. They're often just thoughts-off-the-top-of-my-head that aren't very organized or even thought out. I look back at some of the tweets I've sent and wonder what was going through my mind that day....
Just break contract and leave then, if it's such a hard life. Your coming back is the reason I'm not watching it anymore anyway, so that would just delight me.
Does anyone know what she's responding to with "Oh guys, no"? It sounds like it would be part of a conversation but there are no previous quotes on this topic or anything. I'm pretty much puzzled and upset by this tweet. I want Prentiss back on CM but I want Paget to do what's best for her and makes her happy. How can they force her back on? Surely her contract was over after she did "Lauren"?
Her prior tweets were a bit cryptic. It's kinda like she was trying to hint that she didn't voluntarily return, without totally coming right out and saying it. Read between the lines, the subtext, whatever. But then in the end, we have the tweet that I posted. Passive aggressive. :\
She was responding to people who tweeted her asking why she kept talking about free will. She wanted to clarify that what she hated wasn't the cast/crew or the show but the fact that she didn't decide on her own the come back.
This exactly. It's like the producers/network can't wait to dump on whoever suits their fancy at the time. First AJ and Paget, now Rachel, then Paget again. It's made the whole show distasteful for me.
It sucks. Like it has been said I want Paget back because I miss her character and she brings a lot to the show. She is a great actress after all... but she is also a human being and I definitely wouldn't want her back if that's not something she wishes to do.
If she could just be straight forward (a bit more, lol) and tell us whether or not she really wants to stay...
I mean she may be pissed because ok she wanted to come back but they never asked her and instead jumped to the ultimatum... Or... She may be pissed because it wasn't on her plans to come back and they jumped to the ultimatum...
If she could be straight maybe we could do something about it. Other petition or whatever... LOL (im starting to love those xD)
I feel very bad for Paget but I dont know if her initial 'aggressive' tweets were the right thing to do. I know she was pissed and rightly so, and I know she is good for saying what's on her mind politics and PTB be damned. But I think she inadvertently hurt a lot of fans, not me particularly, and then had to clarify.
I figured when she was 'optioned' she was being forced back in. As everyone was initially celebrating she stayed quiet. And then she got angry. So some thought she was angry at the fans, the show, her cast/family, etc and not just CBS suits. I love Prentiss and her coming back will get me to at least give Season 7 a try but Paget might do better just to stay off Twitter with the whole messy, sordid thing.
And how long is she optioned for anyway? Is it two seasons like AJ or can they just let her go again at the end of Season 7? People in the know, Erica, Paget, etc, are talking but not really saying anything. All of the backstage shenanigans kinda turn me off from becoming a fan of the show I love again.
I've never heard of people being "forced" into contracts. If you want to go, you go. I guess it's possible that their "force" was something like, "we're going to make it difficult for you to get work elsewhere", which is just kind of ridiculous. If that's the case, that truly sucks. I've always appreciated Paget's honesty...
HOWEVER,
I feel like that entire tweet was so weirdly passive-aggressive. "Oh I totally love being here. I mean, I'm being forced to be, but it's ok!!" I dunno, that doesn't make me feel comfortable, as a fan. If she were truly 100% happy to be back, why even mention being "forced"? She wouldn't be "forced" at all if this was what she wanted to do, if you get me. I dunno, I feel like she opened a can of worms with this.
you can be forced into a contract that if you leave before your contract is up, it is possible to be sued for breach of contract. I think that is what the whole "forced" is.
Basically what people are thinking happened is that when they renegotiated her contract to include the pilot out, there was something in there saying that she had to go back if she didn't find something. And then CBS/ABC blackballed her from auditioning / putting in for any of their new pilots, so she could only really do NBC, so they basically set her up to fail.
And I understand her perfectly: She's glad to be back with her friends, but she doesn't like the fact that she didn't have a choice one way or the other without having to take legal action to break her contract, which is expensive and probably more of a hassle than it would be worth. She's been very clear about the fact that it's the network and the bullshit they've pulled that she's not happy with--she's not upset with the fans or cast or crew.
Sorry, once again not buying the CBS-as-bad-guys here. While CBS sucked ass last year, they turned around and offered her a new contract in February - pointed out in the very same article you linked. So she's known since then CBS was on its hands and knees wanting her back. Paget's NOT returning to the same crap she was given when she left.
Also, Paget had Free Will when she signed her contract last year agreeing to the pilot-fails-CBS-can-pull-her-back option. She also wasn't limited to NBC. Fox (again, in the article you linked) offered her at least 3 pilots. So it's not like she was hurting for potential work just because ABC and CBS Studios wanted to put pressure on her to agree to the new shiny return-to-full-time contract they'd *just* offered her.
IMO, this does have all the earmarks of CBS correcting their mistakes. I'd feel more sorry for Paget if they'd "forced" her back to that same crappy contract they made for her last year, but she's not. Or y'know, Paget actually had other prospects (like Pierce Brosnan did when Remington Steele forced him back from James Bond). But neither's the case.
No one can be "forced" into signing a contract. Paget signed it knowing what it meant. The fact that everyone's saying "oh, poor Paget" just shows how little they know about business in general.
And yeah, it did come off as really passive aggressive.
It's not weirdly passive-aggressive. Imagine that you have your dream job (whatever it is) and your coworkers and customers/clients are awesome but your supervisor is the Boss from Hell. The boss gives you a contractual out, suspends you for no reason, and then axes any attempt on your part to take that out, and then insists that you must come back as per your contract. And your boss is still continuing the same behavior as he was before, and it's still your dream job with awesome coworkers and clients/customers.
Conflicting feelings are not the same as being passive-aggressive.
