Here is the discussion post for tonight's episode. Squee and speculate to your heart's content, but no flaming. Remember, comments might contain spoilers.
It's about frickin time that Gideon talked to Reid. Sheesh. I liked the way they ended it, gave some reassurance that Reid isn't going anywhere...because I would kill somebody if he was.
Did anyone else notice that Hotch was missing for like, half of the episode?
I did notice that! I thought maybe because I was doing homework while watching the episode that I just spaced out while he was on screen, but apparently he was just MIA.
I love her two, but I won't join in on ownership this time.
I do love, though, how Reid seems to hate her. IT's so funny. SHe always tries to help/include/whatever him (which is why I think she's great) and he always blows her off, and she always seems kind of put out (and cutely sad). Hopefully my two favorites will get along soon.
SSQQUUIIIEE!!!! REID!!! GIDEON!!! That Ending will be brilliant for my new music vids!!^^ Also I am now an offical Prentiss Fangirl! I can't help but love her! She is a fellow geek and we must stick together! Awesome Ep all together though. Amazing premise with a twist on an old favorite story. It was really well done. And finally some good J.J. Loving! I'm glad AJ is getting more screen time now!
I loved the Prentiss stuff we got in this episode. Most of it was implied, but I think it was there. Morgan's line: "You, Emily Prentiss, have never been an antelope." In addition to being fun reference to his backstory, it felt almost like foreshadowing. I'm pretty sure Prentiss has trauma in her past. And I don't care what JJ says about her robot-like demeanor, Prentiss was angry at the rapist and police officer.
Speaking of JJ, good for her. Nothing like crossing a few professional boundaries and flirting with police officers. It's good to see her getting some time on the show.
And finally, some people talking to Reid. Specifically, Gideon. And Morgan. And I was also happy to see Prentiss trying to talk to Gideon about it.
So now, Ethan seemed pretty sure Reid was using the drugs. And Reid didn't tell him he was wrong. And the "previously on" basically all dealt with drug use. But Reid never brought it up, and nobody seems to have called it. So I'm not sure what was going on.
I really liked the episodes, especially 'cause I'm really interested in Jack the Ripper =) As for the Reid/Gideon thing at the end, to me it sort of came out of nowhere. You could tell in previous episodes that Morgan and Prentiss knew and were worried about Reid, but I hadn't seen much of that with Gideon. Then, out of the blue, he just tells Prentiss that of course he knows something is going on and he decides to go talk to Reid. That might be the writers' fault, or maybe some scenes got cut, but it just seemed to me like Gideon didn't really seem worried till this episode. I think this episode is finally making me like Prentiss a bit, but still not a whole lot. I did love all the JJ scenes and her flirting with the cop, although I hated the cop's accent, because it seemed like too much, rather than natural. And I'm sad that there was so little Hotch. He seemed to just disappear after awhile. And, there was maybe.. I dunno, 2 sentences between Morgan and Garcia and that made me sad =( because I love all their interactions. But, overall, a very good episode and I already can't wait till next week =D
although I hated the cop's accent, because it seemed like too much, rather than natural.
I was thinking that the whole time. I was also like "Good, stop calling him daddy, you sound like some old guy's boy-toy!"
I agree with the Gideon thing too. Gideon: So we should get Reid's mad skillz for this. Prentiss: Um, yeah, about that, the only thing more inapproriate then the shirt I'm wearing is Reid's behavior lately. There might be something wrong there.. Gideon: Psh, I knew that peon, more profiling and less actual thinking, k?
I love Gideon very much but the man's a freak.
And also ditto on the Morgan/Garcia thing! I want more manly computer geek love dammit!
I really only have one thing to add - everything else has been covered.
Was anyone else blown away by the female Ripper's performance at the end? I thought the whole thing was beginning to sound a bit hokey but then she just brought the it all home.
I find myself liking Prentiss more and more the longer she's on the show. Reid's obviously had the poor girl tied up in knots, terrified of somehow making an already ugly situation even uglier, and yet when push comes to shove she shows her true colors and sallies forth into battle for Reid's sake, to try to rescue him, when everyone else seems determined to simply let him keep floudering in silence. I forgive her for being insensitive last week for the way her body reacts when Gideon makes it plain that he's known all along (and everyone else on the team has, too) that Reid has been struggling. Her body gives her away. She already cares for Reid enough to identify with him enough to feel a desperate need to do something to help save him, and she's not above feeling just a bit of anger at the way that the people who should've been doing something about the way he's been struggling have apparently not only been letting him struggle to see which way he'll break but also keeping her out of the loop, regarding Reid (I assume to protect Reid in case he breaks a bit more publicly than they expect). Realistically, Prentiss hasn't been with the team long enough to earn anyone's trust yet. (Elle was known by members of the team before she joined the B.A.U. and she obviously earned her way, so the issue of trust was less thorny, with her character.) Keeping her out of the loop makes sense. She's the only obvious high risk, when it comes to the possibility of someone in the team lodging a complaint or going to a higher up to ask about whether or not Reid is still fit to work on the team and in the field in his normal capacity. Well. Her and JJ, but JJ's guilt over what happened to Reid will keep her silent. (And speaking of JJ, I've decided I like how they're letting us see bits and pieces of the way JJ's experience in the Henkel case has been and is affecting her. I wasn't sure, at first, but the more gradual reveal works well with her. And her ability to empathize with the good detective almost in spite of his particular brand of charm is reassuring. I hope they start up a sort of modern-day correspondance relationship. It'll probably be good for both of them.) Honestly, I think this episode is just as much about Prentiss as it is Reid and Gideon (who have a wonderful moment there, at the end, where their bodies just mirror each other so perfectly that I actually squeaked in fangirlish anticipation for what it'll mean for the greater story-arc of the season), and I'm glad that they're telling us more about Prentiss. I worried about being given a replacement for Elle who looked so much like Elle did near the start of the first season (before her hair got that reddish tint and got lighter and she got a bit more color to her). But Emily isn't an Elle knockoff. She might perhaps occasionally feel some of the rage that drove Elle away from the team (she was dressing as bait when they went out looking for the killer in hopes of preventing that second kill of the day. And she was definitely not at all happy with either of the rapists or that idiot cop who let them get away with their crime), but she's not been consumed by it. Whatever may have happened to her was probably ugly, but I'm beginning to get the notion that it's taught her how to do more than compartmentalize. I think I may've underestimated her. She might be the strongest person on the team right now, in terms of her core of strength.
And wow. The lj says I'm over the character limit. Huh. Guess I'll post in two parts . . .
As for Reid and Gideon, well, let me just say that I don't think I've ever been so glad to have a red herring thrown at me or to have a show set up an ugly plot line just for sweeps as I find myself being with this whole mess with Reid and the drugs. Gideon admits that he's known Reid is struggling and that right there tells me that he (and probably also Hotch and to some extent Morgan) either knew about or figured out that Henkel had been drugging Reid and that they've specifically been not just watching but sort of quietly watching out for Reid ever since the kidnapping, doing their best to steer him away from a crisis point he might not be able to recover from and trying to help him relearn his place in the team and regain a sense of equilibrium without letting anyone outside of the team know about how much damage Reid has taken from the kidnapping incident. They want him to stay on the team, so they've closed ranks around him.
The only question I'm really left with, at the end of this show, is where Hotch was during most of the episode and whether whatever he was doing is going to end up being relevant to the season's story-arc.
Wow, long post! I think you've hit upon some of the exact reasons that I love Prentiss (with the obvious addition that she's ridiculously geeky). I feel like a lot of this fandom wrote her off immediately just because they missed Elle, and I think it's a disservice to her character. Prentiss is different from most of the characters on the show in a lot of ways, and I really do want to learn more about her.
As for Hotch, I honestly think that he wasn't doing anything relevant. They were focused on other characters (tonight's episode was about Prentiss, Reid, and JJ, and that's a lot of character development) and probably just didn't have space.
Of course, now that I've said that, it'll turn out that his whereabouts are the ultimate key to everything...
I loved this episode! I am starting to like Prentiss more. I didn't notice Hotch not being there, maybe I'll have to rewatch the episode. I loved how JJ had no idea how to respond to the flirting. And while I agree that the cop's accent was a bit much, I still found him adorable. And I loved the last scene. "How'd you find me?" "You're not that hard to profile."
Could you please help me with something? What is the name of the of the actor who played the New Orleans police detective in this episode. He looked so familiar to me. I've tried everything to find a guest cast list from that episode, but every one I found is reporting the cast list from a different episode, not Jones. This is driving me completely nutso. Help!!!

Item: When Gideon comes to collect Reid at the end? He doesn't have a glass.
He's already made his decision.
