Yahoo! News is reporting that Mandy Patinkin is being released from his contract and will not be returning to Criminal Minds for the 2007-2008 season.

I'm a little surprised, I must admit. Gideon is just a vital, such a main character. We'll have to see how it goes.

Certainly he's one of the mainstays but at least on the surface the PTB don't seem overly concerned over losing him. Other series have lost major characters at inopportune times (John Ritter's unexpected death when he was on 8 Rules comes immediately to mind) and have still managed to solider on. Depending on who they manage to cast as a 'replacement' for Gideon it might work, if the character is enigmatic enough it should work one hopes.

If they put some 'fluff' character in though it could all go south pretty quickly. Guess we'll just have to wait and see if it all works out for the best. He will certainly be missed, surely.
