If I was a criminal, I'd be... in jail by now. I'm not smart enough to go up against law-dudes like Hotch! :P

Now that I've introduced myself, I have a question for those of you who are much more knowledgeable about this show than I...

Have any of the characters ever voiced their opinion on the supernatural? You know, ghosts, demons, God... I know Morgan and Reid had an exchange recently about God and the devil, but what about the other characters? And have ghosts or supernaturaly things ever been mentioned? I'm trying to write a Criminal Minds/Supernatural crossover (I know, even *I* can't believe how corny that sounds), and I don't want to make a character skeptical when they're canonically not, or vice versa. The story is set just a short time after Birthright, so I don't need to know about Elle or Gideon's views. JJ, Hotch, and Reid are the most central to the story, so I'm especially looking for info on them.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Reid actually appears to be openminded about the possible existence of telepathy--season 1 episode "Broken Mirror," but other than that, I'm not sure it's been discussed.

Gideon believes in God. So does Garcia.

I was here.

Also, I get the feeling that Reid's an agnostic or atheist, from his conversations with Morgan, but that's conjecture rather than fact.

Yeah, absolutely. You need to watch that S1 ep. They have a thing with a set of twins who may or may not have some kind of ESP thing, and Reid is the one who's perfectly comfortable saying "There's stuff we just don't know, okay?" while everybody else looks at him funny.

I think he's a firm believer in the scientific method in its purest form, which means that in Reid's world, you get your facts and then you form your hypothesis, not, you form your hypothesis and then you distort your facts to support it.

I have tried unsuccessfully to convince someone to write this crossover before. I really want a story where John or Dean is a serial killer and Sam is tragically confused. No luck so far. I would love to see what you come up with.

Hotch hasn't said anything directly in the show one way or another.

In "Blood Hungry" & again in "Revalations" it's hinted his family is the Deep South old money type -- which means Hotch was raised with religion. He is certainly very familiar with the Bible.

However, fanon holds Hotch to be an atheist. In "Natural Born Killer" it's strongly hinted Hotch was abused. Hotch is a highly rational thinker; he certainly would have seen the hypocrisy between his family's good Christian pretense and the pain he suffered out of the public view. Furthermore, Hotch is very tender-hearted under the stiff upper lip; it's hard for most fans to imagine him believing in an all-powerful creator who has the power to end the suffering Hotch witnesses every day and then chooses not to -- much less give such a being worship. Lastly, Hotch is the most proficient in forensics out of the team, which hints at a scientific background. Scientific background doesn't automatically mean atheist, of course, but it does lend to a healthy sense of questioning accepted platitudes.

Garcia, incidentally, was raised Catholic. (Her brothers were in Tadpoles, a Church-run program. "P911")

JJ was raised in East Allegheny, Pennsylvania ("North Mammon"). Small towns usually mean religion, but not always.

Hotch isn't the type to take anything on blind faith; he's pretty grounded. However, he does respect the beliefs of others; he said nothing denigrating when Morgan re-found his faith, nor does he balk at Rossi's unsubstantiated beliefs ("I can feel it," "it's something in the eyes," astrology, God.)
