WATCH
Criminals to keep in mind It's a crime more TV police dramas aren't better. "Criminal Minds" is better, though there's some argument over whether Mandy Patinkin's departure at the end of the second season is a plus or minus.
Though the premise isn't at all unique -- the protagonists are FBI profilers -- the viewpoint focuses on the criminals rather than on the crimes and crime fighters. And a series of powerful guest stars has enhanced the episodes. That includes the current season on CBS and the reruns (the taut second show of the series airs at 11 p.m. Friday on A&E).
Regardless, Thomas ("Dharma & Greg") Gibson as the sleek leader Hotch and Matthew ("The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou") Gray Gubler as the socially inept but brilliant Dr. Spencer Reid are sufficiently arresting themselves to carry the series.
=================================
since the article asked...do you think mandy's departure is a plus or a minus?
i liked gideon pretty well and thought i'd be as sad as reid to watch him go. but frankly, i think season 3 was excellent and i loved the more ensemble feel to the show. but that's just me.

Date: May. 29th, 2008 06:21 pm (UTC)i agree. imo, that's the best thing about gideon leaving. i love that it's more ensemble instead of HERE'S GIDEON...and some other guys.
- before it seemed to be more about Gideon.
see above. :-)

Date: May. 29th, 2008 06:40 pm (UTC)Exactly - whereas now, it's a team thing. And that team thing is 110% better. Not that I dislike the older episodes, because I don't, but I'd still call Mandy's departure a plus.

Date: May. 29th, 2008 06:20 pm (UTC)i agree on both counts.
but I also simply LOVE Rossi. And he's seems to be better for the team.
i haven't reached rossi love, but i am circling like. and i definitely agree he's better for the team. *nods*

Date: May. 29th, 2008 06:37 pm (UTC)Course, if they wanted to tip in the favor of Reid-centric episodes, I wouldn't complain!

Date: May. 29th, 2008 07:09 pm (UTC)very well said. looking back, i can't believe i was so afraid of season 3 sans mandy.
And Rossi still needs to meld into the team a little better. He's got a big ego and tends to grandstand a bit, in my opinion.
he does, but in a way i like that. i think it's realstic to have a character who's a little full of himself. and i like the way the rest of the bau is "whatEVER." and i was also relieved hotch is still in charge. if that had brought in rossi to be over hotch i would have had to bring out the smite stick.
Course, if they wanted to tip in the favor of Reid-centric episodes, I wouldn't complain!
this seems like a wise course of action and i recommend the show move in this direction at once. *nods*
ps. i'm about 75% done with my derailed tag. i'll prolly post it for you tonight. *glee*

Date: May. 29th, 2008 07:20 pm (UTC)I think it's definitely a plus. Sure, I liked Gideon, but before it seemed more like he was the star of the show and the others were just sort of tagging along. Now it's more about the team and I love it, even though I still have to get used to Rossi.

Date: May. 29th, 2008 08:36 pm (UTC)YES! *hugs team*
even though I still have to get used to Rossi.
i still haven't warmed up entirely to rossi, but i've definitely thawed. :D

Date: May. 29th, 2008 07:42 pm (UTC)Like someone said before, it's more about the team now and less focus on one character (though it still feels like some characters are getting more screentime than others it's not nearls as extreme as before).
I also felt Gideon was a bit creepy sometimes. ^^;

Date: May. 29th, 2008 08:33 pm (UTC)yes. i just watched "the fox" the other night and it always freaks me out when gideon starts screaming in that house. i think morgan and i both have the same WTF expression. :D
!!!!!
Date: May. 29th, 2008 08:57 pm (UTC)He was a bit too intense at times.

Date: May. 29th, 2008 07:44 pm (UTC)He was likeable yes, but wasn't the most interesting thing about his interactions with the unsubs/Reid? Of course, I may be biased, but ntl.
Anyway I feel like giving Garcia and Emily and JJ and Morgan more screentime never hurts and it's not like Reid and Hotch were hurting for storylines in the first two seasons and because Gideon was older and used to the job and "set in his ways", I see this as the only possible way for his character to develop realistically, without becoming static and weighing down the show.
So, yeah. Definite plus, although I am just a neutral on Rossi. I guess every crime fighting team needs an old dude :P

bwah!
although every once in a while i'd love to put rossi and gideon in a room and see how they react to each other.

Date: May. 29th, 2008 08:56 pm (UTC)while I agree on Reid keeping stealing away screentime (and I say that as a rabid fangirl), it doesn't feel like Hotch had much of a storyline yet, even though he's been in it from the very beginning.
It's like he's always somehow there in the episodes but he's still missing his own "Profiler, Profiled" or "Penelope"
Though JJ and Prentiss have it much worse, that's true.

Date: May. 29th, 2008 09:19 pm (UTC)and i say, keep stealin' baby. or...share with hotch. i would very much like a hotch and reid storyline. one of my fav eps was when hotch and reid interviewed the creepy old murderer. *loves*

word. i'd love to see his history, even if they've changed it from "NBK." *crosses fingers*

Date: May. 29th, 2008 09:17 pm (UTC)agreed. and i'm kind of glad that gideon just walked away instead of killing himself.
The writers did a good job handling the departure and in recasting another actor.
i like joe montegna and even though i don't love rossi, i do think he's a good addition to the cast. a breath of egotistical air, if you will. ;-P

Date: May. 29th, 2008 10:41 pm (UTC)And heck yeah, Hotch and Reid could carry it. I wouldn't want them to though.

Date: May. 30th, 2008 03:12 pm (UTC)as much as i love hotch and reid, i do want the whole ensemble bit. *grabby hands prentiss, garcia and morgan*

Date: May. 30th, 2008 03:18 pm (UTC):D HI!
I thought I would be shattered when Mandy left because I do love him but it is much more of an ensemble show now and I am hoping season 4 will be even better (though season 3 was good considering his depature and a writer's strike).
word and WORD. i thought i'd be blubbering into my remote control without mandy, but i didn't. not once. i love the ensemble feel so much!
I am eager to find out more about Prentiss, I really love her character and Paget Brewster.
i think paget is wonderful. i've like her since she was on friends about a million years ago.
I think Rossi is great but I am such a fangirl for Joe Mantegna, I am completely biased.
hee, he is very good in the roll.
Oh and I have to say I am rabid fangirl of Derek Morgan.....I feel like Penelope most days.
ha! that's not a bad way to feel. :D

Date: May. 30th, 2008 01:12 am (UTC)Not only that, if Mandy and his divalicious ways had stayed, it would've had a negative impact on everyone else.

Date: May. 30th, 2008 04:48 pm (UTC)good point. i think penelope was awesome. and maybe we wouldn't have had 'true night' either, which is another of my favs.

I think the writers have been able to take the show in a new and different direction, which is nothing but good for us.
*nods vigorously*
And I love that we've been able to see more of Garcia (and thus more Nicholas Brendan :-D) because she is the bomb.
you are right and YOU ARE RIGHT. i'm so glad to see someone who likes kevin! and garcia is always made of win.
thanks for answering! :-)

Date: May. 31st, 2008 12:10 am (UTC)Though I do miss Gideon :(
Also unlike what the article said, I do think this idea for a show is original because it is about profilers. Forensic psychology is a new field and I don't think a drama that focuses on a team of profilers has been done before. Am I wrong? What I LOVE about this show (since I'm a psych major) is that they focus on the psychology of WHY the criminals do what they do, not HOW like CSI and those other shows do. They think like psychologists not cops and that makes a BIG difference. And that is what makes this show stand out and makes me hate all those other crime dramas.

you've hit the nail right on the head. the psychological aspect is one of the reasons i enjoy cm so much. it's SO much better than all the csi shows. i can't think of a show about profilers before this one either. i'm so glad it's doing well. i need my cm fix! :D
