You must . . .

WATCH

Criminals to keep in mind It's a crime more TV police dramas aren't better. "Criminal Minds" is better, though there's some argument over whether Mandy Patinkin's departure at the end of the second season is a plus or minus.

Though the premise isn't at all unique -- the protagonists are FBI profilers -- the viewpoint focuses on the criminals rather than on the crimes and crime fighters. And a series of powerful guest stars has enhanced the episodes. That includes the current season on CBS and the reruns (the taut second show of the series airs at 11 p.m. Friday on A&E).

Regardless, Thomas ("Dharma & Greg") Gibson as the sleek leader Hotch and Matthew ("The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou") Gray Gubler as the socially inept but brilliant Dr. Spencer Reid are sufficiently arresting themselves to carry the series.

since the article asked...do you think mandy's departure is  a plus or a minus?

i liked gideon pretty well and thought i'd be as sad as reid to watch him go. but frankly, i think season 3 was excellent and i loved the more ensemble feel to the show. but that's just me.

before it seemed to be more about Gideon.

Exactly - whereas now, it's a team thing. And that team thing is 110% better. Not that I dislike the older episodes, because I don't, but I'd still call Mandy's departure a plus.

well, I was sad, when Gideon left, because he was a really interesting character (but somehow also a bit scary), but I also simply LOVE Rossi. And he's seems to be better for the team.

I think I've said this before, but maybe just to you so what the heck. Mandy Patinkin is a very accomplished actor--when he isn't getting his diva on. Gideon was a fascinating character. I worried a bit about his departure. However, the team was strong enough to carry the show, even if they hadn't bothered to bring in Rossi, and I do like the ensemble feel of the show now. Rossi is growing on me, especially after his old case episode, but I'm really glad they made Hotch the team leader instead of bringing Rossi in above him. And Rossi still needs to meld into the team a little better. He's got a big ego and tends to grandstand a bit, in my opinion.

Course, if they wanted to tip in the favor of Reid-centric episodes, I wouldn't complain!

I think it's definitely a plus. Sure, I liked Gideon, but before it seemed more like he was the star of the show and the others were just sort of tagging along. Now it's more about the team and I love it, even though I still have to get used to Rossi.

While I haven't warmed up to Rossi yet and do find Mandy Patinkin a very fine actor, I'm not all too sad about him having left.
Like someone said before, it's more about the team now and less focus on one character (though it still feels like some characters are getting more screentime than others it's not nearls as extreme as before).

I also felt Gideon was a bit creepy sometimes. ^^;

exactly.
He was a bit too intense at times.

Honestly I agree with everything that's been said above-- Mandy Patinkin is probably the reason this show got off the ground so it stood to reason that while he was on it, he'd get more focus but I didn't find Gideon that interesting of a character.

He was likeable yes, but wasn't the most interesting thing about his interactions with the unsubs/Reid? Of course, I may be biased, but ntl.

Anyway I feel like giving Garcia and Emily and JJ and Morgan more screentime never hurts and it's not like Reid and Hotch were hurting for storylines in the first two seasons and because Gideon was older and used to the job and "set in his ways", I see this as the only possible way for his character to develop realistically, without becoming static and weighing down the show.

So, yeah. Definite plus, although I am just a neutral on Rossi. I guess every crime fighting team needs an old dude :P

while I agree on Reid keeping stealing away screentime (and I say that as a rabid fangirl), it doesn't feel like Hotch had much of a storyline yet, even though he's been in it from the very beginning.
It's like he's always somehow there in the episodes but he's still missing his own "Profiler, Profiled" or "Penelope"

Though JJ and Prentiss have it much worse, that's true.

I don't think Gideon's departure hurt the show. (and in some ways it helped to show just how draining the job can be) The writers did a good job handling the departure and in recasting another actor. And while I always liked Gideon as a character - I never completely bought him as an FBI agent. Rossi is much more believable in that role.

I wouldn't really call Mandy's departure a plus or a minus. I liked Gideon, and now I like Rossi. I might like Rossi a bit more, but I wouldn't say that Gideon leaving was a minus.

And heck yeah, Hotch and Reid could carry it. I wouldn't want them to though.

Hi...new person. I thought I would be shattered when Mandy left because I do love him but it is much more of an ensemble show now and I am hoping season 4 will be even better (though season 3 was good considering his depature and a writer's strike). I am eager to find out more about Prentiss, I really love her character and Paget Brewster. I think Rossi is great but I am such a fangirl for Joe Mantegna, I am completely biased.

Oh and I have to say I am rabid fangirl of Derek Morgan.....I feel like Penelope most days.

I think it's a plus. If Gideon hadn't left, season 3 would be nowhere near as awesome as it turned out to be - it would've been focused on Gideon, so we might not have got "Penelope", or JJ's romance, things like that.

Not only that, if Mandy and his divalicious ways had stayed, it would've had a negative impact on everyone else.

It seems like after Mandy left, they got to experiment more - True Night being the #1 example of that. I wonder if it was due to not having to focus so much on the one character?

As much as I adore Mandy Patinkin (Rube is still one of my favorite TV characters of all time), I think the writers have been able to take the show in a new and different direction, which is nothing but good for us. And I love that we've been able to see more of Garcia (and thus more Nicholas Brendan :-D) because she is the bomb.

At first I thought Gideon's departure was a definite minus and even thought that I might not buy the season 3 DVDs because the show seemed to be lacking. I had no idea how important he was until after he left (since I'm infatuated w/ Reid of course). But Rossi is warming up to me and Gideon's departure has allowed other characters to shine. Hotch has really replaced Gideon, not Rossi as I think was the intention. And so I think the season suffered a bit but that's only because a major character left and the audience was left trying to recuperate. Now that everyone is used to Rossi, I think the show will be able to survive and seemed to do pretty well.
Though I do miss Gideon :(

Also unlike what the article said, I do think this idea for a show is original because it is about profilers. Forensic psychology is a new field and I don't think a drama that focuses on a team of profilers has been done before. Am I wrong? What I LOVE about this show (since I'm a psych major) is that they focus on the psychology of WHY the criminals do what they do, not HOW like CSI and those other shows do. They think like psychologists not cops and that makes a BIG difference. And that is what makes this show stand out and makes me hate all those other crime dramas.

Anyone know why Mandy Patinkin left? Did he move on to do something else? His IMDB page doesn't mention anything...
