After having been lurking around for a while (mostly in bau_fic) and secretly indulging in my guilty pleasure of reading fanfic I felt like it was time to come out of lurkdom (anonymously still, though...) and voice my love for CM :o) I also intend to have a shot or two at writing fic myself, should inspiration care to strike.

A quick word of warning - I'm not yet that familiar with LJ so please forgive me for stupid newbie fauxpas which I will certainly make.

Some words about me:
Name: The Alter Ego, at least for the time being ;o)
Age: 28 (and still none the wiser)
Location: Switzerland (ghastly, no Season 3 yet - but I'm still catching up on 2 anyway)
Favorite Shows: CM (who'd have guessed *g*), Bones, Remington Steele
Favourite Guys: Hotch, Booth, and Mr. Steele (yeah, I keep falling for the same types over and over again)

And then there's one question which really keeps me wondering: How come that Hotch/Reid are like the most prominent fic pairing? Assuming that there's rather more girls than guys writing here - it kind of feels like self deprivation to me ;o) I'm really nosey to find out what's behind this!

Cheers 2 all
The Alter Ego

Hello there!!

I'm a newbie too - lots of us out there :)
And exactly like you, I've been lurking about reading fanfic, and have just started writing and meeting a great group of CM fans here - it's the place to be!
Yep, the Hotch/Reid pairing does seem to be a popular one (I'm a Hotch/Prentiss obsessive, but heck, I'll take anything Hotch ;)).

I'd love to see some answers to that question (having never written Hotch/Reid, I don't know...).
Maybe simply the older, wiser, world-weary agent, and the young, awkward boyish guy make for an interesting, slightly dark and forbidden theme? Unexpected too, since Hotch is so strait-laced and Reid is actually kind of innocent in an adorable way...

You either get (and enjoy) the slash or you don't. I write them because I like exploring the relationship between them...whatever form it happens to take. I pick up on a slashy vibe between the two of them, the subtext that I see on the show--but not everyone sees it, nor do they necessarily see it between Hotch and Reid. Reid and Morgan is another popular pairing--and one that I don't really see; they've got more a brother type vibe than lover. But that's just how I view it--doesn't make it right or wrong. I can't give you a better explanation than that. (Slash is common and happens in most fandoms.)

And some folks don't see anything like that at all. *shrug*

As for "self deprivation"? The last thing I want to read is some author's self-inseration fantasy--Mary Sue fics (what they're called) are usually badly written and, frankly, very boring. I get a much better "charge" out of a good Hotch/Reid fic than I ever would from a Mary Sue or het fic. But again, that's just me, YMMV. :D

I think the first thing with choosing pairings is to pick two guys that you find attractive or that have chemistry together. Reid seems to be a favorite character of many. He is quite vulnerable both physically and emotionally. Hotch is a very attractive man; he can be a bit stern but he also has a wonderful gentleness. If you find both men hot, there's a lot of in between the lines to explore. Hotch has protected Reid while he works through the drug thing even though it puts his own job at risk. There's also a lot of room for kink if one wanted to explore that.

I wish there was more fic exploring the Reid/Morgan dynamic, gen or slash.

Believe it or not, but about 90% of all slash is written by women.

In my view, it's one the one had something similar to a man dreaming about two women getting it on. It's just the double amount of hot that's involved. (which would be the bases of the incredibly turn-on of PWP fic with two men)

Also, it's the vulnerability of a type of closeness some men can't portray with other women. I wouldn't necessarily call it their feminine side, but perhapes that's basically what it is. Women like to see men more vulnerable and since in most our views men are strong and capable and, well manly in the company of a woman (there are exceptions, but just bare with me here), having him be with another man, gives us writers the oportunity to let them open up more. (which would then be the personal drama in slash fanfiction)

Don't know if I explained this right, but that's how I see it.
