So I just re-watched s02e11; Sex, Birth, Death. *making way through season 2 again*

But I noticed Hotch has a bike hanging in his office. I've never noticed before. Is it in later episodes?
Do you think he rides it to work? Or is it just hanging there for decoration.

If he rides it to work he must live a lot closer than I figured for some reason.

I totally think he bikes to work.

And I'm holding out until we see him in spandex.

hotch probably bikes, sleeps and showers in his suit.

but that would be sweet if he had suit-printed spandex.

Umm...I think he uses it to relieve stress or to clear his mind. I picture him biking when he gets a free second.

Well, his home is placed in DC in the pilot, I think, but who knows?

If he does live in DC maybe he takes the train part way and bikes the rest? I think I remember a discussion about how the FBI main office is further from the train than one ep (that one? The one with that creepy kid who stalked Reid) made it seem?

Well, they say they're in Quantico, and the metro does no go there. However, the real BAU is in the Hoover building in DC, and the Metro DOES go there....

Oh Criminal Minds writers, confusing fans since 2005. Do you suppose the Quantico thing was a conscious choice or a goof?

My guess is that it's a fossilized carryover from when the show was "Quantico," an ER-style melodrama about the lives of sexy young FBI agents....

Or perhaps that made it easier from a location perspective in that fewer people are going to know what the Quantico campus is supposed to look like, whereas the Hoover Building and its environs do not lack for popular points of reference. There's only so much stock footage can make up for, and I'd imagine that filming in that area post 9/11 makes some people twitchy.

Criminal Minds does have a rather unique perspective on DC/Northern VA geography.

Maybe Hotch bikes around Quantico during his lunch hour or something. Except I'm not convinced the man would ever actually take a lunch hour...

Heh, that they do. It gets a little confusing.

Maybe when they aren't on assignment he's seekritly a lazy bum. How much time would he actually spend around the office, anyway?

I thought Hotch lived in McLean rather than Washington.

Well it seemed like he used to live in Seattle in the pilot, and there's a lot of bikers in Seattle so maybe he likes to bike in DC too? Haha.
