CBS brainstorms 'Minds' spinoff

CBS will be doing some "Minds"-splitting this season.

The network is planning a potential spinoff from its hit crime drama "Criminal Minds" that will be created by the show's executive producer/showrunner Ed Bernero and executive producer Chris Mundy.

Mundy will be writing the planted spinoff, which will air as an episode of "Criminal Minds" in the spring, from a story by him and Bernero.

Like the original series, the potential new show would be produced by ABC Studios, the Mark Gordon Co. and CBS Studios.

Details are sketchy, but the spinoff is expected to feature a new team of FBI agents, not existing "Criminal Minds" characters.

The producers already have begun to send out feelers to talent agents about the types they're looking to cast.

The development pattern for a "Criminal Minds" offshoot mirrors CBS' template for successfully spinning off "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" into "CSI: Miami," which begat "CSI: NY," and "JAG," which spawned "NCIS" and then "NCIS: Los Angeles."

A "Criminal Minds" spinoff was discussed more than a year ago, but CBS focused on developing "NCIS: LA," which was introduced in a two-episode arc on "NCIS" in April.

"NCIS: LA" debuted last week as the highest-rated new drama this season with 18.7 million viewers and a 4.4 rating/11 share in the adults 18-49 demographic.

"Minds" also is off to a strong start this fall, winning Wednesday night with 15.8 million viewers and a 4.4/12 in 18-49s, the show's best demo rating in a year.

Bernero and Mundy are repped by UTA.

I'm glad for the spinoff...but even happier that they aren't taking current cast away to fill spots.

Hmm. Any word on what slot it would have? It couldn't follow CM because that's CSI: NY's slot, and I don't think they'd risk moving that.

There is a point at which duplicates ruin the ingenuity of the idea.

One of the main reasons I love this show is because I adore the characters and the people who play them. If they can do the same with the spin off, then I'll be watching.

Another thing that I hate about this spin-off idea is that if it would be dealing with another team of profilers then there'd either be a lot of overlap with types of cases that they'd done on CM already OR they'd use really good ideas for cases for the spin-off instead of giving them to the original. And, let's face it, the original deserves all the best.

The problem with a spinoff is that it sucks the attention of the creators away from the original show. There are only so many hours in a day, so if Bernero and Mundy are working on CM2, they're not as focused on delivering another great season of CM.

Would it focus on the mythical other agents in the BAU who we sometimes see filling up the other cubicles but never actually do anything?

I don't think they could EVER make a second show as good as the original, so I'm going with a NO on this one. I watch it for the characters! I already love them so... :D Plz don't ruin the first one by making another. Humph.

From: [identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/_touched/
The same here, I originally started watching it for the cases and the basic premise of the show, but it soon became so much more than just that to me - it became about the characters and how much I loved their interactions and their stories that they had to tell. So, yeah...think I'm gonna have to vote a NO on this one, myself.

I vaguely remember reading about this spinoff idea before and, if I remember correctly, it would not be about another BAU or other profilers...it would be based on another department/team in the FBI that has a (different) specialty. That while some characters (possibly the more minor ones) that are on Criminal Minds might show up on the spin-off all original cast would stay on Criminal Minds and a new major cast would be developed for the new show.

The idea itself is hit or miss...It could be great to view FBI case-solving through another specialty and sometimes a spin-off is a really great show all on its own (Law & Order:SVU comes to mind). But it could also detract from Criminal Minds in creative effort (now Bernero and Mundy would be working on two shows rather than focusing on one) and...well...in my experience once the spin-offs come the originals loose their luster (Law & Order anyone? How about CSI??) and I really don't want that to happen to my favorite show!

Personally, I don't see how making another show will affect the quality of the original (much like NCIS) and I honestly love the profiling and crimes more than the characters (/ducks) so I'd LOVE a second show. Another hour of TV about serial killers? Yes please.

i had no idea they had NCIS spinoffs :o. that show is all about the cast! i mean, it's not that good of a crime show, but i love the characters and people who play them!

and with criminal minds, well i love the characters and actors more than people in NCIS, but it is also the best crime show there has ever been, for ma at least. so i guess i understand why they would want to do a spinnoff, but are those things ever really good? seriously. no. so, if they leave this show alone then idk, it's like what ever. the stupid spinoff can exist, but it's not like i'm that interested in watching it.

Didn't we do this drama once already? Sigh. I ho[ed they'd given up on the idea.

Wouldn't watch a spin-off even if they made one. I like this show. Specifically. And I despise the concept of spin-offs.

Any spinoff makes me nervous because it can make the original look foolish but...there aren't enough details yet.

And I'm not sure but I'm sure I'd follow Bernero pretty much anywhere.

That's kind of what I'm afraid of most, when I think of a spin-off in regards to this show. I just don't want any of the original CM luster to be taken away from it.

I don't like this. A spinoff is not bad idea, but if the writers gets split into two, or they all work on both shows the quality of CM is bound to go down.
