Watching a rerun of "Memoriam" on A&E and I can't but help (AGAIN) wish Hotch had stayed with Reid during the session with the hypnotist.  I wonder what the logic of having Rossi there was?  And was this just because it was a Thomas Gibson "lite" episode?

A) TPTB do not ship Hotch/Reid. Therefore creating slashy subtext just isn't on their list of considerations. :/ (For which I am happy, but still, it's sad for you and I sympathize.)

B) If Hotch had been in Vegas, we wouldn't have had his hilarious "say what? OMG" face when Garcia stated she did good oral. Which had me laughing for days.

And and sane person would know that any homosexual relationship would not be "shipped" by TPTB.

... have you been in this fandom long? Because there is a not-small-enough contingent of fans who would argue that they are entitled to a certain level of slashy subtext between Hotch and Reid and get quite pissy when that doesn't happen.

So, I don't think asking for the authority figure that he has known and trusted since he joined the bureau was out of the question.

But not the by-the-book G-man who would have to send him home. Choosing to overlook officially what subordinates are doing with their vacation time and actively participating in full view of the local cops and Strauss are very different. Hotch could get away with one, but not the other -- not without facing consequences and jeaopardizing the Bureau's invitation-only reputation.

I've also noticed that after "Elephant's Memory," Reid has tended to choose Rossi and Morgan as his confidants, perhaps realizing that no matter what their friendship may be, Hotch is still the boss at the end of the day.

I think that might have been part of it. That is the chance to give TG an easy working week.

As for the story reasons. Well Morgan was a given - on the team itself he is the one Reid is most likely to open up to. (Garcia and JJ are the others, but for obvious reasons they were both out). And having Rossi there gave us chance to see that he too cares about Reid. We know that about Hotch. It was nice see it from Rossi.

Looking back on the first episodes with Rossi, I can sort see where someone might come up with that idea. To me it was never a matter of Rossi not liking Reid, it was more a matter of getting use to him. He was knew Hotch, had worked with agents like Morgan and to lesser extent Prentiess and JJ (even if JJ's job was a new one to him). It was Reid and Garcia that he had to get use to.

And to be fair, for Reid to stop fanboying him so much. Which he did.

I still think that occasional Rossi is surprised a bit by Reid's energy or eagerness, but to me is more the sort that of an old dog with a puppy.

well, you have to keep in mind that reid's investigation was unofficial. as unit chief, hotch's continued presence in vegas could have been wrongly construed by the local authorities as the bau trying to step on their turf. plus, i'd also assume that he'd have less leeway when it came to an unofficial investigation than the rest of the team because he'd have to answer to strauss.
