UPDATE: CBS' 'Criminal Minds' Cuts Female Cast But Will Add New Female Cast Member

UPDATE TUESDAY 11AM: A source close to CBS stressed that the casting changes on Criminal Minds were a creative, not financial decision, and a way to "refresh a veteran drama series." A new regular female cast member will be brought in sometime next season to fill the void that will be left by Cook's departure.

Yeah.

It seems to me that if they're letting A.J. go, and they're going to replace her with another actress, that there must be something going on between A.J. and the network that we don't know about. Maybe it's a dispute over money, maybe she wants to move on to other things, I don't know. Could be that they're going to do things with Emily's character that we don't know about, and that's why Paget's contract has been renegotiated as well.

I agree...we're better off not speculating until we have more facts.

My impression was that Paget would be happy playing FBI for the rest of her life. The two versions of the story clearly don't make sense together, and I hope there will be some official statement soon, and I hope it will not be as bad as it looks, I don't want stupid drama. :/ Just when we thought the finale was OK and we didn't have to worry that anyone was leaving, this madness happens...

That having said, if a new female character is introduced... People used to bash Paget and Prentiss when she was first introduced, call her a Mary Sue and so on and so forth, and I am not looking forward to the same happening again.

LOL! I'd stopped watching Without a Trace regularly a bit before she arrived. I was always vaguely resentful that Poppy Montgomery's character and Eric Close's didn't make it work.

If she wants out we'll have to accept it just fine but I doubt she had a say in this, it's not like they cut her out all of sudden, they just didn't renew her contract. It's still in process so who knows, maybe we can change something or more likely not, because 2400+ (for now) people signing the current petition may not be relevant now against millions of viewers (last season).

Paget is not leaving, they'll just cut her screen appearances.

It feels like they've deliberately ruined the show.

The wording of this article said CBS didn't pick up AJ's contract, not that SHE chose not to renew it. Maybe that's not significant, but it seems to me that her leaving was CBS' decision, not AJ's. As for Paget, as many posters before me have said, I seriously doubt she's all gung-ho to have her job cut in half, since you get paid per episode... and she really seems to enjoy her job.

Yeah, I feel for them more than I feel for the viewers. I mean, for us, it's our favorite show; for them, it's their jobs on the line. It's especially sucky that they apparently didn't even get notified by CBS. Let's just say if they decide to fuck around with the cast, I won't be watching anything on CBS (not that anything other than Criminal Minds and NCIS and occasionally CSI: NY are any good these days). :/
