Former Dirty Sexy Money star Bellamy Young will guest in an upcoming episode of Criminal Minds as Beth, a museum curator who meets Hotch (Thomas Gibson) in the park while he’s training for triathalon.

The episode also guest stars Charles S. Dutton, playing a boxing trainer at a Philadelphia gym.

Before the start of the season, showrunner Erica Messer teased a new romance for one of the agents, but declined to give details. She had also hinted, however, that she wanted this season to see a new beginning for Hotch, whose ex-wife was killed a few season ago. “Hotch … has been going through the motions of raising a child as a single working parent and mourning the loss of a great love,” she told EW after the premiere. “And even though he and Haley were divorced, she was his first love, his only life and all that. We’d really like him to smile again and let go of that. It’s going to be new and exciting for all of us and the audience.”

I'd love for Hotch/Prentiss, but I'm completely fine with this since Hotch deserves to be happy after his divorce and Haley's death.

Yes, why can't he meet her as another parent or in the course of work.

It would be nice to see Prentiss get a shot at a love life or Reid getting more than 15 minutes with a cute woman.

Although Breen Frazier re-affirmed Ed B's 'no inter-team romance' rule in last week's writer chat (http://cmsetreport.blogspot.com/2011/10/cmsetreport-chat-transcript-for-breen.html) so (despite the M/R endgame joke) we're not going to see any ships become canon. I personally prefer it that way, but it would be nice to see how the characters can be explored in the context of romantic relationships. There's an interesting post on that here (http://criminalmeta.tumblr.com/post/11583766701/criminal-minds-7-10-spoilers).

Now THAT would make sense. ...and it'll be awesome if we get adorable step siblings.

I just hope there won't be any Sound of Music vibe from this. (Strict patriach who doesn't know how to warm up to be a father gets the help of a younger woman with next to no past of her own, it'll be complete bull.)

I would totally heart it if the show goes Prentiss/Reid or Prentiss/Reid/JJ, but since JJ has Will and Hotch had been divorced, Hotch/Prentiss/Reid!

Like, there is no love like the first love

ESPECIALLY if the first love die.

So it would make a lot more sense and feel less angsty if Hotch were to hook up with a fellow widower. Someone with as much past as he did and would not expect him to let go of it, because he/she wouldn't either, even if they do make new memories. Kinda like, John Kerry and Teresa Heinz:
"My legal name is still Teresa Heinz. Teresa Heinz Kerry is my name...for politics. Just so people don't ask me questions about so and so is so and so's wife or this and that. Teresa Heinz is what I've been all my growing-up life, adult life, more than any other name. And it's the name of my boys, you know?...So, that's my legal name and that's my office name, my Pittsburgh name."

...and I don't get the sense that he begrudge that, because he has HIS own kids before her too.

I don't really know how to feel or think about this either...

First of all I also think Hotch deserves to be happy, but my shipper side, as I'm sure is happening with a lot of Hotch/team member shippers is a bit uncertain, because although I've never wanted couples among the team at the show, it was quite nice write and read romantic cannon fics between team members (Hotch/Rossi myself).

That begin said, I'm pretty open to this idea, as long as the writers developed it in a believable way, because I just couldn't imagine Hotch falling in love at first sight, and starting a relationship so quickly. I hope the writers remember he has a son to care and think about, and don't rush him into a relationship just because they want to see him smile more and let go of his grief.

Is this what everyone has been hounding Anna Fleiner about on Twitter?

I'm pretty sure, like 99.99%, that an inter-team romance will never, ever happen. That's why we have fanfiction.

Epic amounts of THIS!

Honestly, introducing a romantic interest for any team member is always divisive. I mean, look at the reaction to the idea of Reid/Seaver (or, actually, Reid/anyone not BAU).I can't even think of a way that wouldn't upset and alienate a massive segment of the fandom (The worst way, of course, being to hook him up with a member of the team).

Frankly, I'm happy with the character development this offers, and highly amused at the mental image of what it would be like for Hotch trying to date now, considering the last time he tried was probably in his late teens, early 20's. Omg, the culture gap.

Lol can you imagine the awkward?? Ive loved this season so far and I think I trust the writers enough to give us what we want but also give us a great show at the same time, if that makes sense...

Also, I want Lynch to take a short walk off a long bridge and more Anderson scenes. We'll see, we'll see.

I'm not sure how to feel about this, I'm glad that they're sticking to the "no inter-office romance" but this I'm not sure of. I guess we should be glad that it's not a victim's family member that he'll be getting involved with. (re: Morgan) And it would be nice to see him smile again, but I think the team getting closer and showing those moments of their lives together as friends outside of work would be just as good a way to see him smile and start to move on as well. This is just one of those things, where I'll have to see how it plays, before I can really make my decision.

I was so scared that it was going to be Reid. Because Reid seems to get all the romance story lines, and I just don't care.

This sounds good. I'm totally Hotch/Prentiss myself, but Hotch deserves to get some loving. He deserves to be happy.

Date: Oct. 19th, 2011 04:32 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] e-rousset.livejournal.com
Are you joking about Reid getting all the romance sotrylines ?
He kissed an actress who deliberately made him fall in a pool for that very purpose and that was it, it wasn't a romance in the slightest.
He got a phone number from a bartender because she liked his magic trick and that was it too. Not a romance either.

- Hotch/Haley was a big, big thing,it took screen time and even became one of the focal point of the Hotch/Foyet storyline.
- Morgan had more screen time with Tamara Barnes and subtext with Jordan Todd,
- Garcia/Kevin anyone ?
- JJ/Will, anyone ? And let's not forget that they have Henry.
- And we're going to meet one of Rossi ex-xife...

I fail to see how Reid gets 'all the romance storyline', he never had an actual romance on the show. You can't call what we saw for him 'romance', he never even had a SINGLE date, just awkward moments with two women in 6 + years and I didn't find it convincing at all (and I'm not the only one).

That being said, I prefer it that way for more than one reasons.

I want the writers to concentrate on Reid's genius, and apparently his centric episode of the season (and probably the only one, just like in season five and six...) will concentrate on that aspect.
Good, he's a one of a kind genius and the writers tend to forget that very regularly.
I also think that if they wanted to have a romance for Reid they would mess it up, it would probably be like : "look, we're going to throw another bimbo at him".
So I'm glad about the romance NOT being for him.

I also hope for a reappearance of Jane Lynch this season, after three years.

I'm also glad to see Hotch having a lighter storyline this season. Given how dark his storylines have alway been, he needs lighter stories in my opinion. And I'm happy about him getting some loving too.
Now Prentiss just needs to find a nice boyfriend outside of the team later.

You are right. I posted that when I was half asleep. Reid doesn't get all the romance. But for the first several seasons, he was the central focus character. We know more about his background than any other character (we do know about Hotch's family in the sense of his marriage and kid, but not his background). And I found that really frustrating. I've enjoyed the last couple of seasons that haven't been all Reid-centric, and I don't want that to change. Although, I wouldn't mind an episode or two with Jane Lynch.

From: [identity profile] e-rousset.livejournal.com
I understand your point of view but I think that the central character of the show during the first seasons was clearly Gideon. Even the actors admitted that 'Gideon was the show'. They didn't even know if the show could really go on without him when the actor left.

It's true that we know more about Reid's background than some other character's background. But there hasn't been anything on that front (Reid's background) for a very long time.
I think the writers wanted us to understand where Reid was coming from, socially he's unlike any of his teammates who are/were much more adjusted.

Also, as you mentioned, we saw Hotch home life extensively (at least compared to the home life of the other characters) and we still see that. By contrast, Reid is one of the only team member whose apartment/house has never been seen.

We also get glimpses of Hotch life as a Unit Chief when he's with Strauss or another higher up.

We also saw some of Hotch past cases and there has been several references to his career as a prosecutor.
It's something we can't see for Reid because his carrer as the FBI pretty much starts with the show, he was only in the FBI and in the BAU for something like two years before the show started.

But I understand you wanting to see more of Hotch's background.

I know you mentioned some of these points on your post (Hotch's home life), my point is : we do know more about Reid's childhood than Hotch's, but Reid in return will never get the kind of scenes Hotch has/had concerning his private life, (at least never to that extent).

Actually, I'd like to know more about JJ or Garcia or Rossi, the characters we haven't learned much about. But I'll take a Hotch storyline because he lost his wife and deserves to have a little happiness.

Date: Oct. 19th, 2011 05:56 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] e-rousset.livejournal.com
- Well, we'll see more of JJ, Will and Henry very soon (episode 7).
- Rossi's storyline is coming up and it will be a two parter (and the actor said he wanted to see Rossi's past as a Marine explored too);
- Episode 8 is also a Garcia's episode and apparently, from what the writers have said during chats, episode 13 will feature Garcia and Kevin again and I think they'll play a big role.
- Episode 12 should apparently deal extensivly with Prentiss trauma (that's what Breen Frazier said and he'll involve Hotch a lot).

So, your wishes are coming true ;).

I personally hope episode 11 will be a good Reid episode and that maybe, just maybe the story about his mother's problems mean we'll see Jane Lynch (even if it's the last time she appears on the show).

I don't exactly know where I stand on this. I really liked the dynamic between Hotch and Haley, back when Haley was still alive (Something to do with high school sweethearts that always get to me). If they recreate that kind of connection with this Beth character, I will be very upset. I need them to kind of let on about the relationship, and develop it slowly. I don't normally warm up to new characters until after at least 10 episodes. If this is a hit and run sort of thing, I wouldn't take it very seriously. I just don't really see Hotch as being the kind of: "Okay, time to move on and stop praying to mommy, Jack!" kind of person.

Even though it's been what, at least 1 year, I still find it a little too early for this. I agree that Hotch deserves some happiness but...this just feels iffy and nags at my chest somewhere. However, I will give them the benefit of the doubt and cling to my high hopes somewhere.

BTW, totally agree with the Hotch multitasking thing. He seems to have a lot of time to do a lot of things recently...doesn't seem too realistic...

I've never liked how a character 'getting a life' always equals getting a love life. Honestly, I dont see Hotch opening up to a stranger when there are members of his team he's known at least a decade, been in the trenches with, and is still closed off and evasive with. He was with Haley for nearly 25 years. She divorced him because he couldnt put anything but work first and then she was murdered because of what he does. This man needs therapy, not a date.

I want to see Hotch smile more, be human, but I want to see that with Jack and the people who have cared about him for years and not some new chick out of the blue. I want to see more team/family moments.

I'm also on the bandwagon of where is he going to find the time to date and start a relationship that would be realistic, even by TV standards. He'd need the ability to clone himself and a year supply of Adderall.

Having said that, the idea of Hotch contemplating moving on, actually meeting someone and dealing with maybe dating a little or making friends outside of the FBI, I can live with that. It all comes down to how its written and played. But I would rather see Hotch open up to the people who love him and not someone he's never met before (though for him that might be easier because there's less judgment).

I completely agree with everything.

My only problem with any of this, other than the obvious where is going to find time thing, is that even though I'm an avid fanfiction reader I'm almost completely against any of the team finding a love interest, at least on screen, just because I believe that that's not what this show is about. Yes I thoroughly love when we get more insight into a character it's just that it's hard to balance delving into love lives when there is, what, 7 people on the team and what this show is supposed to be about. This show needs to go back to it's grassroots and dealing with the cases. And yes I'd like to see Hotch happy and moving on but I think that I'd rather see this offscreen and just have it referenced. Of course we'll need to see the meeting but I really don't want it to be focused on... unless she's going to be an UNSUB.

I honestly feel like the whole Caroline plot line was absolutely pointless. PLUS a lot of my family died from ALS so I'm really picky about that subject. I just don't feel like it has any real baring on the show especially it was only what 2 or 3 episodes if I'm not mistaken. And he didn't even to seem to be dramatically effected by it, no absence from the show. I know they referenced that he had a bit of one.

I just think that anyone on the team, especially Hotch, having a relationship with anyone that's not in any kind of law enforcement is kind of a ridiculous notion. And even that has strain (JJ and Will, which oddly enough is one of the only love lives I fully support on screen). I just think this whole notion is ridiculous and unnecessary.

Really I think my only problem with any of them (I guess I'll say minus JJ) having a love interest onscreen is that I feel like focusing time on that it not only takes away from the cases but also the team dynamic, which is really what they need to be focusing on after the clusterf**k of last season. Little glimpses here and there should be fine but I don't really want them to make this a major point of any of the episodes.

Now let's see if they can surprise me. So I guess I agree with you one that it will all come down to how its written and played.

Of all the things I've seen adn enjoyed this season, the Rossi's 1st wife thing was pointless. I didnt mind that she came back but the storyline they chose was silly. And it distracted from two interesting cases, and brought me out of what was really going on for 5 or 6 minutes of silly storyline.

I love JJ and Will and it was good to see them this week. I also happen to love Garcia and Kevin, I know a lot of people dont, but they work together and its where they spend their time together.

Anyhoo, I would love for the show to focus on awesome cases and team dynamic and little else. Yeah, give us references to off-screen lives and the occasional showing of Jack cuz he's just so cute, but I agree that off-screen is better and the majority of the show focuses on the team and the cases. Because I also feel that some characters will end up getting more "personal" play than others and you still will find out nothing about someone. You know?

Five years she's been on the show and other than the BS secret agent storyline that I loathed, we know nothing about Emily Prentiss. We still dont even know where Hotch was born. There is so much to give us as fans of the characters instead of bringing in new stuff that no one quite cares about.

Date: Nov. 14th, 2011 02:54 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] nvr-surrender3.livejournal.com
I completely forgot about Garcia and Kevin! OMG! I love them. It kinda bothers me that they're hardly referenced. And I completely agree with that. They work together and they work on the same thing... they're both analysts and completely get each other.

I'm glad someone agrees with me. And if they MUST deal with love lives I think they should just focus on furthering the relationships they do have instead of cultivating new ones.

Hell they really need to bring Sean back (Hotch's brother) has he been in Jack's life at all? Anyways I completely agree. Even before Prentiss' season 6 departure we barely new anything about her. There's a lot we don't know about so much of the team. I think we know the most about Reid, Garcia, and Morgan. Everyone else is kind of left in the lurch. They can give us personal stories without involving some love interest. And if they absolutely feel the need it needs to be with someone else in some kind of law enforcement. I just don't see anyone else really understanding what they go through daily. And yes, I think they'll focus mainly on one or two characters and leave the other alone and we still won't know much about the characters.

Sometimes I feel like they give us more background on the people they introduce for a couple of episodes than the people we've been with for 7 years.

Really the only thing I enjoyed with Caroline plot-line is that we found out that Rossi had a child that died on the same day it was born. I definitely cried that episode but I'm not sure if it was really that sad or it was more that my uncle, my gradfather, and two of my granpa's brothers died from ALS.

Anyways I really think that all of this stuff just distracts from the interesting cases they present and the possibilities of learning more about the regular characters. And I really wasn't a fan of this last episode. There was a cute moment or two in it but really... not one of this season's best.

You know, at this point I'd even like to know more about Strauss than them introducing a new love interest for anyone.

I actually loved this last episode. Really really did.

Garcia and Kevin are epic in their awesomeness. I just squee'd when I found out Garcia was gonna be dating Xander...what could be more perfect?

And I love Erin Strauss too and want more stuff about her. She's one of my favorite characters to write about so if they give us more of her, and more Jayne Atkinson, whom I love, sign me up. I wish she could be more recurring. But there are like 15 more episodes to go this season so I'll enjoy what I can because for the past 2 seasons I was just more and more disappointed with each passing week so looking forward to the show again has been awesome. Maybe I'll just enjoy that. Oh, and cross my fingers we learn something about Emily (even if it contradicts/screws with 3 years of fic writing).
