The writers of U.S. TV dramas LOST, THE SHIELD and CRIMINAL MINDS have been praised for the way they accurately portray torture scenes. New York-based charity Human Rights First has nominated the three shows, together with The Closer and Boston Legal, for the organisation's first Primetime Torture Awards. [...] Human Rights First spokesman David Danzig says, "As incongruous as it may seem for a human rights group to honour the depiction of torture, these awards recognise that only a handful of TV shows have taken the time necessary to depict torture in a thoughtful, realistic fashion."

Makes perfect sense to me.

Look at the way something like 24 glamorizes torture--makes it seem like kind of a good idea, and of course the good guys never break.

And the fact that CM will give a real depiction of torture and its aftermath, well, it's one of the reasons I watch the show.

It is better than Saw or Hostel, I guess...

It's still a little bit strange though, to have awards.

I think the 'realistic portrayl of torture award' is one of those commentaries on U.S. culture that slaps you in the face with a truth that mostly gets ignored. U.S. TV glamorizes violence, someone else made a comment about torture on 24. But look at slot placement, Criminal Minds, which has very adult themes, depicts violence in all its bloody horror, and has in just about every episode at least one scene that makes you want to either barf or weep (or both) is on at 8:00 p.m. (CST). CSI NY, follows at 9:00 p.m. And CSI NY is crime drama, but the latter placement is due to the occassional display of skin and frequent risque scenes.

To put in context CSI NY's spray on condom scene (in a lab over a glass tube, no skin in sight) pings higher on the networks 'oh children can't see that' than anything Criminal Minds has shown including the Revelations torture scenes.

Well Revelations isn't exactly a very good example if you're looking for how much violence CM USUALLY shows. In fact, CM shows very little violence except in a removed fashion. It's accurately described, and you get crime scene photos, and maybe dead bodies with their throats cut. But you very rarely watch someone get murdered on screen. Revelations showed FAR more violence than usual, and even that was often merely implied (the dogs and "Jezebel").

Legacy managed to be absolutely gut-wrenching and you never saw what the unsub DID to people. You just saw the after effects. That and the broken glass room. Mein gott... the broken glass room.
