oops. i haven't posted my sort of rubbish scintillating reviews for a while.

i liked these two eps, therefore: i bring words.

1x16 the tribe

random observations: i totally forgot hotch had a brother. oops. the way garcia handed off her cleaning supplies to unnamed hapless guy so she good ogle sean? PRICELESS. the method of killing was super gruesome in this ep. yuck. bonus points: hotch has the opening quote! YES!

handy itemized list:

1. i love that reid knows all about war ritual killings of plains indians. [eddie izzard voice: like you do.]
2. garcia has heart-shaped post-it notes. *love*
3. reid's trademark HAND WAVE OF AWKWARD when he's introduced. it's interesting to me that hotch and gideon both shake hands with jane bear on the reservation, but reid waves. in fact, he almost always waves instead of shakes hands. hmmm.
4. i love how reid immediately starts whispering answers to the classroom questions. and then blurts out the answer in samuel's place.
hotch: is your name samuel?
reid: [awkward] sorry.
me: {{{LOVE}}}
5. it's telling how blackwolf calls gideon a professor and reid his student. it's an apt description.
6. i sort of heart john blackwolf in general. and his reason for not carrying a gun.
7. reid gets to start the profile!
8. i thought it was a nice twist that ingrid's dad had her kidnapped. i didn't see that one coming. then again, maybe everyone else did.
9. reid offering to speak to ingrid alone...and then her repeating her ss#. excellent scene.
10. some people have said hotch was too bad-assy in this ep. i thought he was a fine amount of badass. and i enjoyed hotch and blackwolf's dynamic.
11. hotch being extra hotchly with awesome on top by going to see sean at the end. AND SMILING. THERE WAS REPEATED HOTCH SMILING. ALERT THE MEDIA. JJ NEEDS TO HOLD A PRESS CONFERENCE.

1x17 a real rain

i love this ep for a variety of reasons. it was interesting, creepy, but most of all it had REID'S EPIC FAIL WITH CHOPSTICKS. \0/ i felt bad for the unsub yet again.

helpful cheat sheet:
1. the opening scene on the plane when morgan and jj are razzing reid about never going to new york. poor little workaholic reid.
2. once again, we see that even though gideon is reid's mentor, hotch is the one looking out for him.
hotch: i thought you were going to talk to reid about vacation time?
gideon: what's vacation time.
me: *stern look at gideon*
3. the bau gang plays cards! yay!
4. hold up! reid's not wearing colored gloves yet. hmm. but he IS wearing booties which makes me strangely happy.
5. reid is in lecture mode during the profile. he's all business and there's not a bit of stutter or awkward. shallow: he's wearing one of my fav sweaters. <3
6. the unsub's finger tapping in the church was a nice, subtle clue. i didn't realize what it was at the time. well done, show.
7. reid hanging all over the dead priest's body to get a better look made me laugh. and also his ewww face and finger clench when the knife was slid from the victim's ear. mgg? you sir, are fairly brilliant.
8. reid has mighty knowledge of everything flint and egyptian mythology.
9. HOLD THE PHONE. GARCIA MADE HOTCH SMILE!
10. reid's in charge of the video presentation AND gets green screen time. \0/
11. okay. possibly the best scene ever. the bau happy family fun dinner tiem. reid's flying noodles and pitiful attempts to use chopsticks made me glee. and jj helped him. awww jj. you're like a big sister much to reid's chagrin.
12. elle admitting her frustration at rapists getting of. oh elle. dear dept. of foreshadowing, here is your gold star.
13. jj and morgan's glee over reid's chopstick malfunction. *cuddles everyone* reid knows who invented chopsticks, but he can't use them. such an awesome sense of togetherness here.
14. gideon and hotch's discussion on the courthouse steps re: taking the law into your own hands.
15. hotch's hotchy "watch your mouth" to the reporter who dissed gideon. *hearts*
16. reid is along on the arrest with his gun! he's growing up so fast.
17. letting us hear the voices in the unsub's head was a nice touch. i was hoping the unsub would live.
18. i loved how gideon and hotch BOTH had quotes at the end.
19. the creepy "on the street" quotes at the end made me sad.

study questions:

1. did you like john blackwolf?
2. why do you think reid rarely shakes hands? is he uncomfortable with the physical contact. from his hug track record, i'm tempted to say yes.
3. what are your favorite bau "togetherness" moments?

1. John Blackwolf = amazing. I love how he pretty much pwned half the BAU without even putting effort into it.
2. I've always figured he hates touching people, because he's afraid of being rejected.
3. The "physics magic" is my absolute favourite.

That was the cutest scene ever, and it really shows how much younger he is than the rest of the team.

1. did you like john blackwolf?
I loved Blackwolf and especially his interaction with Hotch--that was totally enjoyable to watch. "Captain America here shot number 5." *hee* I really wish they'd bring him back for another ep, although since the actor's now a regular on Saving Grace, I doubt it will happen.

Overall there was just so much win to this ep, it's one of my faves. Loved the Samuel thing and Reid in the classroom. He just couldn't help himself, he HAD to answer. Loved the girls at the beginning of the ep all gawking at Sean. ("Now I see it" JJ). Loved Hotch going to see his brother at the end.

some people have said hotch was too bad-assy in this ep.

Hotch can never be too much of a bad ass. *G* I like Hotch being a bad ass. :D

2. why do you think reid rarely shakes hands? is he uncomfortable with the physical contact. from his hug track record, i'm tempted to say yes.
I don't think he likes physical contact with people he doesn't know. In HAT, he shakes hands with the Baltimore FBI agent who was in Natural Born Killer. And didn't he shake hands with the father in Tabula Rasa--he knows him, if he did. I don't think there've been very many eps where he shakes hands with someone he's just met. But I do like the geeky little wave.

3. what are your favorite bau "togetherness" moments?
The dinner scene from A Real Rain. Pretty much any of the plane eps. Reid's birthday.

once again, we see that even though gideon is reid's mentor, hotch is the one looking out for him.
And we have Gideon as the Dad and Hotch as the Mom, taking care of the kids, as usual. *G*

HOLD THE PHONE. GARCIA MADE HOTCH SMILE!
This is the call where he says that he loves her, iirc. I get a kick out of the fact we hear him say those words to Garcia before we hear him say them to Haley. *smirk*

Yipeeee, more ep. reviews! *squishes you*

1. did you like john blackwolf?

Yes, good solid character. No BS, no faffing about the place - he was all business! I really enjoyed his explanation of the tracking methods he used, based on both instinct and close attention to his surroundings, it contrasted (and blended) nicely with the routine profiling methods used by the BAU pack. His dry humor/observations (was it even humor??) - most enjoyable! :)

2. why do you think reid rarely shakes hands? is he uncomfortable with the physical contact. from his hug track record, i'm tempted to say yes.

The minute I saw this Q. (great one!) I thought of the surgeon, Landman, in L.D.S.K, who refused to shake hands with anyone because his hands were the tools of his trade - "the hands, you understand?"
Obviously, this can't account for Reid's aversion to pressing the flesh. He could be a germ freak who's afraid of catching bugs from strangers, but that doesn't fit either. From a psychological point of view *pops ridiculous psychologist hat on*, you are probably spot on - he's just shy and finds some forms of social contact difficult. Poor little lamb.
Another theory, before I analyze this to death - typically, it's the dominant person in an interaction who proffers a hand to shake, as it demonstrates confidence, taking control, etc. As someone who is usually the youngest and least dominant in these interactions, it's just him not taking that leap?

3. what are your favorite bau "togetherness" moments?

Oooh! Yep, everyone's gonna say the bit where they share a meal in A Real Rain, because it really is the best scene of lovely, smushy togetherness: everyone's relaxed and joking, forgetting about the case for a brief while. Reid and his fight with the chopsticks!! :D
Hotch asking Elle if she's seeing anyone - cutting in with split second precision when she starts complaining about everyone talking shop :)
Gideon, as always, assuming the almost silent, yet commanding daddy-of-the-pack role :)
*love*

Two great episodes.
Though Tribe probably has one of the most disturbing killings so far. I always flinch when they talk about how those teenagers died.
(so many things on CM still mak me feel uncomfortable. I'm kinda glad about it though. The day I don't feel affected but something like that anymore will be a sad day. o.o)

Real Rain.
I felt bad for the unsub. He didn't deserve to be shot.
I'm not saying vigilantism is okay (some of those comments at the end creeped me out), but I still pity him.

1. did you like john blackwolf?

pretty cool character. I especially liked the interaction with Hotch. Captain America and the fortune cookie. Nice. ^^

2. why do you think reid rarely shakes hands? is he uncomfortable with the physical contact. from his hug track record, i'm tempted to say yes.

Agreed.
He just isn't comfortable. Should he offer his hand first? Shouldn't he?
He doesn't know what to do, so he just waves.

3. what are your favorite bau "togetherness" moments?

dinner in Real Rain.
I didn't want this scene to end. I makes me happy and go all gooey and mushy inside.

awww jj. you're like a big sister

exactly.
As temtping as it would be to pair two characters as gorgeous as them, JJ is just too much of a big sister, and I like it better that way for now. ^^ I love our (not-so-)happy profiler-family *g*

anytime hotch gets some extra screen time is good with me. especially when he has such a good guest character to work off of.

I keep hoping they will give Hotch a bit more of a focus in season 4. (part of me wants him to be the one blown up just so he can get a bit more character developement in the future.) Considering he's been there from the start we know pretty little about him.

i also loved the scene in penelope where everyone is at the hospital and jj and emily hold hands. it's not a happy scene, but they're together and their love and worry is palpable. *hearts*

I loved that scene. In fact I loved the whole episode. Character-love everywhere!

word. i think the writers or ed said that they'll never ship hotch/emily or reid/jj and i say: thank god.

That's good news :)
As much as I love these characters, I prefer them being family to being lovers.

My thoughts on the Reid-not-shaking-hands question... it's been implied before (and I totally agree) that Reid has some form of autism, and people who have autism generally don't like being touched. Speaking for myself here (as someone with autism), I don't like shaking hands with or hugging people I don't know because a lot of the time it actually hurts. If it's someone who knows me and knows to be gentle and not just hug me or touch me without any warning, I usually don't have a problem with it. So that's always been my theory. :)

Oh, and I looooved John Blackwolf. And Hotch's badassness. The Tribe is one of my fave eps EVER. :D

That's the thing, though... if I feel like hugging someone, I tend to really cling to them, especially if I've just been through something frightening and someone who makes me feel safe comes along. The hugs in Revelations were absolutely perfect. :)

People don't tend to shake hands in my social circle. Does it really hurt? Why would people do something like that socially if it hurt? Is it a dominance display, like baring your teeth?

Does what hurt, shaking hands? Or shaking hands if you're autistic? Shaking hands doesn't generally hurt unless it's someone with a really strong grasp. If you're autistic, every kind of contact can hurt.

Like I said, I've rarely shaken hands. It's incredibly odd to me. If people I know don't hug then they don't touch, generally. It's never hurt me, but on the rare occasions I have shaken hands, the shaker doesn't grasp very firmly. It's almost like you hold their hand and then drop it. I don't tend to read social signals very well, though, so maybe other people have gone to shake my hand, but I haven't recognized the special signal. It just seems to me that a social gesture wouldn't involve pain unless it was a dominance display, like one dog biting another when they first meet. I've read books that have used it as a dominance display, but I kind of took it along the lines of stuff like, "flashing eyes", as in cool, but not exactly common.

Does physical contact hurt ALL autistic people? Or is it just one of many symptoms/signs that can crop up? I have a friend who's autistic(Asperger's) that I have to remind myself not to hug, but he just seems to be uncomfortable with it, not pained.

From: [identity profile] meg-tdj.livejournal.com
Shaking hands doesn't generally hurt. The "signal" for it is someone holding out their hand to you, nothing mysterious. I think it was originally a sign of good faith, that no weapons were concealed, and now it's just a societal habit. I personally don't like it because of germs. ;)

Most people with autism have either overactive or underactive senses, which means that they either feel, hear, see, taste, and/or smell things too strongly or not strongly enough. This can happen with any number of the senses, and each person is different. I'm one of the lucky few with all 5 senses in overdrive (and yes, I say "lucky" in a sarcastic way), so a light touch can feel like a slap or a scratch, loud noises cause panic attacks, I have to wear sunglasses even indoors because lights are too bright, I eat nothing but bland food, and smells give me headaches. So yeah, touch hurts me, but probably doesn't hurt everyone with autism.

By "hurt," though, I mean more like sandpaper on my skin rather than a knife through my flesh, if that makes sense. Even certain materials hurt my skin, so I pretty much only wear cotton or silk. A tight hug or a playful nudge can hurt quite badly if I don't know it's coming, though, and I'm a skinny, tiny girl, so if I shake hands with a man who has a tight grasp, he often doesn't realize that it feels like my hand is about to break, heh. I basically react like I've been punched every time someone surprises me with a touch, because even if it doesn't hurt, it surprises and frightens me.

There are many different levels to autism, though. Like I said, some people have the opposite problem to mine - they have underactive senses, which means their discomfort at being touched would stem from their inability to derive an emotional response from it. They would back away from a hug going, "Why are you touching me?" rather than, "You're hugging too tight!" If that makes sense?

I know I'm skipping questions but my favorite togetherness scene is the one on the plane where Gideon asks Hotch if he got the techie girl flowers saying they were from him because he already bought her an MP3 player and did not want said techie girl to think he was sweet on her. Then they all laugh and he says 'maybe not'. I just thought it was great because we rarely got to see Gideon being cute.
