This was discussed briefly on the episode discussion post, but i felt it needed it's own as it could be a HUGE added pain for our beloved leader.

The reaper, Hotch... was there a rape? it was most definitely insinuated, but i felt it was more of a "wait, WHAT?!" moment that passed to quickly to get  a full read on the situation.

im thinking no. if it had, i feel they would have put in more content to support it. all we really saw was a stab that looked below the belt. and the reaper was still fully in pants through the whole thing.

unless it's something hotch blocked from his memory...

does anyone remember what the reaper said to him? about stabbing being a substitute for sex?

if this has been discussed or anything already, feel free to mod it up.

But I think the intimacy of the whole scene was the metaphorical 'unbuckled belt'...kind of? haha

yes, the unbuckled belt would have seemed a bit too... obvious. The whole scene was hard, but it was kinda classy.

Yeah, but as double-standard as it may be, implied male/female rape is still more network-friendly than implied male/male rape. In any of the episodes where we've seen male/male rape it's been waaaaay more off-camera than when it's male/female. Just the way the networks roll. I wouldn't be surprised if we never get a definite answer on this. This is one of the show's male leads we're talking about here. The audience might not take him seriously anymore if they show us that he was raped.* They'll probably just leave it up to our imaginations, so that those of us who saw the implication have something to talk about and come to either consider it fact or explain it away, and those who didn't can remain blissfully ignorant.

*Totally just the way I believe network execs think, not the way I think myself.

If they are indeed going that way they won't leave it to our imagination. At all. They may have a later episode with male rape that brings back memories on hotch, but if anyone here is thinking they're gonna show us some sort of "light" version of what may have happenned, don't hold your breaths. M/M rape is a delicate issue - it's almost like "the gay couple who never kisses" issue, you know what I mean?

However, Morgan was molested (I'm not sure he wasn't raped too, that was never clear for me) so maybe there's a possibility it DID happen and Hotch will have to deal with it.

I'm honestly actually rather shocked that we saw as much as we did.

I think the next episode may allude to/deal with that (male rape), actually, from what I saw of the promo... ("There are some childhood memories that just don't go away...")

well... hotch was abused as a child, but morgan was already the one molested, and i don't wanna sound cruel, but... it would be just another version of the same plot.

and what promo is that? the next episode?

Has it ever been stated in the show that hotch was abused a child? I can't remember that.

Yes. In "Natural Born Killer" in season one he alludes to it, but it's never been stated outright. He said something to Vincent the unsub about how it's logical some abused people become killers. Vincent asked "Some?" and Hotch replied, "Some grow up to catch them."

Ooh, thanks, I don't remember that! I haven't seen season one in a while!

I think it implied mora that he was beaten, rather than sexually abused... but again, it's been a while since I saw that episode :).

I think his words were more than enough indication.

Something like this:

"Isn't that what all you profilers think? That people who use a knife are... impotent, and that we substitute stabbing for the act of sex? Well, maybe this will change the way you profile!" *stab* *the scene cuts out*

Since the scene cut out right after, we have no way of knowing what happened. I think it did, though.

Plus, right before he took off his shirt and told Hotch: "This will be so much easier if you just relax." Or something to that extent... Um, yeah...
