I've been watching this other TV show, Bones. They have a psychologist on the team too. Except they can't seem to make up their minds if he's a therapist for the FBI or a profiler. I know a psychologist can be a profiler, but on CM besides Reid no one has a formal training as a psychologist. My question is how does this work at the FBI? Do their therapists also do consults on cases as profilers? Hotch saw a therapist after Mayhem who wasn't necessarily a profiler, but Rossi also mentions they wrote the questions on the eval.

Also, how long does the behavioural analysis training last in the FBI academy?And what does it entail? Is it focused on the criminal aspect or is it a bit more general?

I'm asking those of you who are studying for this, or who have done more research (and know where to look better than i do)?

edit: a bit of clarification

Douglas discusses that.

It's a yearly week or two of training undertaken by all the field agents who send cases up for profiling--new profilers are selected from among their number after they have proven their worth.

That would most likely be the "desk job" Prentiss came off of. Except in real life, it's less of a desk job than being an actual behavioral analyst is.

Argh, I was unclear.

There's a chain. Local law enforcement->local field office->field profiler coordinator->BAU

According to Douglas:
"Every year, the profiler coordinators come back to Quantico for a week or two weeks of in service training, criminal personality profiling, and crime analysis training, so they're equipped to make these judgements. When they call the profilers in, the unit either has all the material shipped to Quantico, or sends agents out to meet with local law enforcement where the crime or crimes occurred, or has the local law enforcement officers come to see them.

Depending on the case, the FBI will provide the resources they have. Some may be cold cases, some may involve someone who has crossed state or national borders and committed crimes in several regions. The cases have to be prioritized, and unfortunately some have to wait. The more complicated cases are done in a group, with three or more profilers participating in the case presentation, where there's interaction between law enforcement and the profilers-a very intense group analysis. This is a really great way for everyone to put their heads together and come up with something. "

...that's the role JJ fills on the show, more or less.
