I'm a little confused here. IK the spinoff and CM are separate shows, but they're on the same network, and if money is being cut from the CM budget, then... it's got to be going somewhere. And if it isn't going to other (more priority) stars/shows, then where's it going?
And regardless of whether the spinoff is directly responsible for draining the budget from CM, it's still draining other resources (writers, attention from creators, etc.) and so this news does little to endear it to me.
Each show as a 'bucket' that it pulls from. CM has theirs. Sheen $$ has his. CSI and NCIS have theirs. The newly released $$ isn't necessarily allocated to a new show or an existing show. Production costs are on the rise so it could simply go to cover day to day operations. In my professional life, my budget gets cut all the time, so I have to give up something. The $ doesn't go anywhere else, it's just to help with profitability.
Keep in mind that CBS "shares" CM with ABC, so ABC get some of the $$. I'm not sure how all that works but they don't want their rival to get more $$ from them than they have to.
We don't know the full story behind Cook or Brewster and we probably never will. Given how ruthless CBS has been in the past with mouthy stars (the CSI fiasco a few years ago, anyone?), there may be an option or two out there for the actresses we just don't know about?
I think I'm going to call him $heen from now on. Kind of like Ke$ha. I can stand both about the same amount (as in, not much, although Ke$ha has the edge b/c a couple of her songs are pretty catchy) and I think it suits him.
It just seems suspect to me that this is all coming about right about the same time the spinoff is premiering. Yeah, I know correlation =/= causation but I think people are looking for something to blame, and the spinoff's an easy target. I'm not particularly inclined to be charitable to it, either, b/c it's still draining creative resources from the original if not financial. Plus it just looks really stupid and doesn't have enough hot people in it, and is thus not relevant to my interests.
IMO it's still shitty what CBS is doing to CM, regardless of the reasoning for it
I understand where you're coming from, but remember, even if the spinoff didn't exist, there would still have to be a show in the timeslot. And yes, I'm also upset that the spinoff is going to pull resources from the original, but I'm not sure if that's a network thing. I don't think anyone *forced* Mundy to be the showrunner. My other fear is that there is going to be a strain for creative, believable and fresh storylines now that we have two shows about serial killers and profiling. I think the original already struggled with that this season. I guess we'll have to wait and see.
Oh, I didn't mean to imply that the spinoff issues came from the network. I was just trying to clarify why I'm always trashing its lights lol. It just looks really lame and I'd be happy to ignore its existence, but I fear that we'll be subjected to a lot of xovers between the two shows. DNW.
The reality that CM will probably never get back to being the great show it was for S1-early S5 is beginning to dawn on me and I guess I'm just feeling bitter/disappointed. I did not reach this conclusion purely because of the sexism!fail (although it doesn't help). S5 post-"100" was just off for me and I don't get the impression that CM is high on TPTB's list of priorities (and I get that, really I do... it's far more exciting to work on a shiny new project than an old but steady one. Too bad the shiny new project is gigantic pile of dog poo). I do feel that, regardless of the reasoning, there's definitely something dodgy about CBS's policies regarding women actors. How much one has to do with the other, I don't know, but the fact that they're both occurring at the same time has given people who want something to blame an easy target. Either way I still think it's shitty was CBS did.
