This was discussed briefly on the episode discussion post, but i felt it needed it's own as it could be a HUGE added pain for our beloved leader.

The reaper, Hotch... was there a rape? it was most definitely insinuated, but i felt it was more of a "wait, WHAT?!" moment that passed to quickly to get  a full read on the situation.

im thinking no. if it had, i feel they would have put in more content to support it. all we really saw was a stab that looked below the belt. and the reaper was still fully in pants through the whole thing.

unless it's something hotch blocked from his memory...

does anyone remember what the reaper said to him? about stabbing being a substitute for sex?

if this has been discussed or anything already, feel free to mod it up.

I don't think there was - I think Foyet was just making the point that with a profile, using a knife can be seen as a substitute to rape, not that he was interested in raping Hotch. He didn't rape any of his other victims did he? I think he was saying, sometimes a knife is just a knife.

But then again, he wants to torture Hotch. And I think raping him would do that even more.

Plus, we all know that rape isn't about sex with these people. It's about power and control. And what more could the Reaper want?

They used the words "power and control" so often throughout past seasons to define male on male rape, and they also used the words "power and control" to describe Foyet TWICE in this episode. I think that was a pretty clear implication. :-/

Foyet is about MENTAL and EMOTIONAL power and control, though. Think about this--he stopped killing for ten years just to watch Shaughnessy's life fall apart. He's still messing with Hotch, and he's going to be watching.

I firmly disagree with the notion of actual physical rape.

True - rape is about power and control, but again, he didn't rape any of his other victims and why would he think that rape would torture Hotch more than the loss of his ex and son?

Hotch can't do anything about protecting his family, and he can't do anything about seeing them; he can recover from rape, and Foyet has no way of knowing how Hotch would react to a rape - how traumatized he would be. He definitely wants to control Hotch. People react differently to rape - some deal with it well, so never recover - its not something you can predict

I don't know... Foyet said "That if somebody's impotent, they'll use a knife instead. Is that what you think, Agent Hotchner? Maybe this will change your mind." Implying that he was about to show Hotch that he could use a knife without being impotent. :/

Guess it's something that could be discovered bit by bit over the season - maybe a great scene is in the works for advise from Morgan!!!

Add on to that - Foyet is all about power and control .... he would want Hotch struggling to prevent a rape .... why stab him 7 or 8 times, then rape him? He's more likely to have stabbed him once to weaken him or whatever, then raped him, then stabbed him again .... he'd want Hotch to struggle and by the time Foyet got around to mentioning knives and sex, Hotch was in no condition to fight .... no satisfaction in that scenario.

actually, Foyet was all about the sneak attack, if I remember rightly. Wait til the vic's back is turned, and then stab them. It's not about the struggle, it's about the stabbing (thus, the impotence stuff. It's true, and he's offended. He does all of this killing to prove himself manly and in control, and he can't do the "Manliest" thing ever!).

Foyet doesn't want his victim to be capable of struggling.

He wants them powerless .... so if he raped Hotch he wouldn't do it after stabbing him 9 times .... Hotch would barely be conscious .... how would it be traumatic? If he raped Hotch, he'd rape him after only stabbing him once or twice - enough to subdue him, not enough for Hotch to lose consciousness to the extent he did.

I think he was saying, sometimes a knife is just a knife.

I hope so. Poor Hotch ^^;;!

Impotence does not have to mean lack of sexual performance .... impotent - unable to respond - yeah Hotch will be impotent .... unable to help Haley and Jack, unable to know where they are ..... that is more powerful than a sexual assault on someone like Hotch
