Some very, very general s5 spoilers:

Question: Now that Criminal Minds has wrapped up the Reaper storyline, can we please get more of the characters besides Hotch? — Cecille

(Editorial comment from me: Hello? Yeah, like we get soooo much Hotch every season. God forbid we focus on him for a while.)

ADAM: Ask and you shall receive. Executive producer Ed Bernero promises much more of Dr. Reid (Matthew Gray Gubler, who has been sidelined because of a real-life injury) in the back half of the season. "There were some things we had planned for him that we had to just back off of. The guy is there every day for work, he just can't walk." Fine, so maybe we can expect some shirtless Morgan (Shemar Moore) in the meantime? "Anytime we can get Shemar's shirt off, it's a boon for us," Bernero says.

(Further editorial comment from me: Now people are gonna complain there's too much Reid. *lol*)

People bitch all the time. I *liked* the focus on Hotch because we have seen so very little of him as a major character in a lot of the episodes.

I would still love to see him and Reid talk about the trauma of what they've been through at some point - both have been tortured, and it would be interesting to see them bond a bit over that. Hotch has (since early Season 2, I've felt), been pretty hands off on Reid, and doesn't really talk to him much for whatever reason.

Fans tend to have favorite characters which usually leads to favoritism and wanting their favorites to have the limelight. Shows have the tendency to bank on those favorites, even in a team oriented setting -the CSI franchise comes to mind.

One of the things that I have always loved about Criminal Minds is that the show has always felt balanced in the amount of screen time and storylines for each member of the team -not just the so called leads. Matter of fact, I personally don't feel there IS a lead on the show.

We might know more about one character's past than another, but may know more about said character's present. For someone like me who likes the entire team, it makes for a happy camper. For those who dislike a character or simply have a favorite... There just really isn't a way to appease the masses.

Very much agreed. Let's hope they stay on track with the team dynamic. ^^

They're all so dependant on each other I can't really see how you can like one and not another. I mean, I have favorites too, but I don't not like somebody...that's kind of missing the point, in my opinion.

This is good for me since I find the show a lot less compelling when Reid isn't in the limelight. Mostly because the writers seem more comfortable writing Reid for some reason-- he's had the most ridiculous storylines but they've always been captivating imo

Sort of unrelated, but I get why they're leery of writing romantic relationships within the team, but then your only option for romance is awkwardly writing in characters for the sole purpose of romance. Sometimes it works out well-- Kevin, and sometimes it just seems sloppy-- Will, Morgan's new lady (the fact that I can't remember her name is pretty telling.) And like it or not, shows need romance to get viewers.

They've been ridiculous to the point of wanting the character gone so the abysmal lack of fact-checking will stop, IMO. I will never forgive Reid for saying two seconds of exposure to anthrax is the same as two hours. Like Hell. Even my high school anatomy text knows better than that. (And shame on Hotch for believing him.)

And don't get me started on "Conflicted." Ah, yes, you should have noticed something so wildly improbable that there have been no clinical cases ever just because you got Stockholm Syndrome with the last wildly improabable mental illness despite all your spiffy FBI training to the contrary. STFU.

Nevermind that this is also someone who somehow managed to get hooked on dilaudid after three bad trips. WTF, I ask you. WTF. *headdeskfloor*

If the writers are going to put Reid in peril to make the Reid fans go all aflutter, they need to start doing some research first, IMO.

OTOH, Reid has gone back to his Season One level of Unbearable Awesome this season (I mean, "Derailed": he used his issues to take down the unsub with no whining), so here's hoping they don't wreck that for the sake of fanservice.

But more Hotch is always better. :D

The three most popular characters are Hotch, Reid and Garcia. Those are the ones who'll be given the spotlight because that's where the audience is. And since they're my three favorite characters (along with Morgan), I have no problem with it. :)

I would really like more backstory on Emily and JJ and Garcia. Prentiss, especially, because Demonology was so lame that I am almost ignoring it altogether; Garcia because we haven't really gotten much since she was shot; and JJ because, maybe it was just me, but things don't seem fine in her home.

But I do love the ensemble-ish episodes the most.

I'd also like to see more with the girls, especially Prentiss. Preferably without weird exorcisms this time. But hell, I'm not going to complain about all the Hotch this year. And I'll always welcome MOAR Reid... so long as he's not being captured or beaten up for the 100th time.

It is my personal opinion that you can never have too much Hotch, but I'm slightly biased ;)

If we have to see more of anyone, I'd like more of JJ (or a Prentiss episode that doesn't feel like a Dan Brown novel crossed with a bad episode of the OC). JJ's the character I feel we have the least handle on, and she hasn't really had a centric episode or arc (the closest was the soccer girls one, I guess, but I've still always felt a kind of distance toward her that I haven't felt toward the other characters).

Shirtless Morgan is not appreciated in this neck of the woods. I prefer Morgan with his shirt on, doing stuff and being smart. Pls to be delivering on that, Mr B?

I would be very happy to see Morgan's current storyline continued, but I also desperately want lots more Prentiss, and more and better JJ and Garcia team-ups.

A season that feels light on Reid is a good season. They've used him effectively so far this season; I'd rather they didn't go back to last season's pattern where they're so eager to shoehorn in more Reid that they start developing offensive or just silly storylines to hang him off.

Date: Dec. 3rd, 2009 01:27 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] mozzdi.livejournal.com
I like all the characters but Reid has had more limelight over the years than any other character so a break this season wouldn't hurt...reading above "more on Reid" did have me eye-roll. This season has been great with Hotch and I'm glad they went down that road and with Morgan in charge we're seeing more of him too but the ladies seem to be the least explored...one backstory on Prentiss doesn't really count when it wasn't the best story arc but some more backstory on JJ and Garcia with some Prentiss thrown in would be good.

I would really like more variety in the focus on the characters in the episodes, but yeah, I wouldn't mind more Dr. Reid.

Or Garcia.
But mostly Reid. I'm excited to see what they have planned for him!

This isn't saying that I didn't enjoy the spotlight on Hotch, because it was just a phenomenal story line!

How about some love for Prentiss? One episode from last season isn't enough.

And you could never get too much of Aaron Hotchner. :))

It's a scientifically established fact that anytime they spotlight Reid, I will eat it up. Hotch, while a character I enjoy, is less compelling for me. However, it's still been good to get some Hotch time; I may be batshit for Reid, but above all I like the show to feel like it has a team dynamic, and getting to actually see some of Hotch's inner world has made for a more balanced sense of the whole ensemble. Ditto on Morgan's storyline; watching the team reorganize around him definitely helps keep the show out of a business-as-usual rut.

By the same token, more Prentiss and Garcia, pls. Preferably together. Fighting crime. As they do.

Addicts can remain surprisingly functional for a surprisingly long time. While it's true you don't usually see a reversal until the addict bottoms out, everybody has a different bottom and recovery isn't always clear-cut or uniform. I kind of like that we never see exactly what Reid's "rock bottom" is. It would be hard to show that on screen effectively, especially while trying to have a plot populated by an ensemble, and it's nice to have a few unanswered questions about the character. Oddly, it makes him feel a bit more real to me.

More Garcia and back life.

So much this!

I want more Morgan, but I don't want more 'Morgan romances/charms ______ ( insert sister of victim/random female detective/other )', for the simple reason that it's making him incredibly...one-sided, almost. We know he's a bit of a player, and I absolutely love it when he flirts, but sometimes it feels like tacking stuff/flirting/playing big brother to Reid is all he's been doing.

The team dynamic has changed, now that Morgan is in charge ( even if it's just temporarily ), and I'd love if they built up on that. I'd love some friction between Morgan-the-leader and Rossi-the-know-it-all-been-there-done-that ( before anyone chucks rotten tomatoes at me, I like Rossi ). I'd love to see more of the slightly edgier Hotch, and I'd love if they actually dealt with the trauma he experienced, instead of just shoving it to the wayside, like they did with Reid's drug problem.

YESSSSSSSSS. There is not enough agreement available in the world that would describe how true this statement is

I definitely agree with you, though: they've never focused on Hotch in one episode, let alone a series of them. I enjoyed seeing a different side of him besides team leader.

But people will never complain of too much Reid. He pretty much rules the fanbase.

I have to admit that I am looking forward to seeing more of Reid in the episodes, but it is more because it means that MGG knee has heeled up and he can work full time.

We don't really need another Reid episode. And I say that has a Reid fan. I would like to see more of the rest of the characters...

Scriptwriters, like anyone else, have some they like writing and some you can tell when they're really only doing it because they're paid to.

Reid is definitely one they all enjoy writing. JJ especially appears to be very bread and butter - fans may love her, but you can see the writers are fairly indifferent.
