Let's hope they retool it from the backdoor pilot...
At first, I was kinda ambivalent about the spin-off. I mean, it's great that the show is strong enough to earn a spin-off to begin with. But what turned me off is how hard they are trying to make the show 'cool' and 'awesome'. I think the pilot was poorly done and did seriously color my view of the spin-off.
Now, with the push for more 'names'... hell, Garofalo could be a huge fan and this a dream come true for her... it just like they're trying too much for it to be good and not relying upon what made CM a success in the first place: outstanding story-telling. With the name "suspect behavior" so... bland. I mean, really, isn't profiling all about suspect behavior?
Anyway, unlike the CSIs or the L&O, they didn't tag it with something specific. They could have done something interesting like, make this an "international" version or a group that focuses specifically on a type of criminal. To have it as 'generic' as "Suspect Behavior".
So far, they've really only got two names attached as weekly regulars, Whittaker and Garofalo. Which is pretty much with they had with CM, Patinkin and Gibson and you could probably count Moore. So it's not like the original show was just about outstanding story-telling. They also hedged their bets with a couple of recognizable faces and that's, so far, what they've done here.
I don't necessarily agree with the actual selections, either creatively or from a marketing standpoint, but it doesn't seem like an unusually excessive push for name talent to me.
